We are seeking a highly organized, collaborative, and mission-drivenAssistant Directorto support the day-to-day operations of our growing non-profit housing organization. Reporting to the Co-Executive Directors, the Assistant Director will play a key leadership role in coordinating internal operations, managing administrative and organizational systems, and supporting the implementation of strategic goals. This position is ideal for someone with a strong background in non-profit or co-operative administration, excellent communication and problem-solving skills, and a demonstrated commitment to housing justice, tenant rights, and community development.

The Assistant Director will work closely with senior leadership, staff, and external partners to strengthen organizational performance, ensure compliance, and help expand access to affordable, community-led housing solutions across Canada.

Qualifications

University degree in Business Administration, Project Management, or a related field supplemented by 2 years of related experience which demonstrates the competencies noted above. Equivalencies to work experience will be considered.

Role and Responsibilities

Operations & Organizational Development

Support day-to-day operations and performance management across departments.

Act as secondary liaison with Members, student unions, labour unions, government reps, and universities.

Assist in establishing Housing Committees and securing new affordable housing levies.

Support land acquisition and development planning with universities and partners.

Coordinate government relations, including funding access and regulatory compliance.

Assist in strategic planning, research, and advocacy efforts.

Support fundraising and financing initiatives (e.g., grants, social finance, community bonds).

Build and manage relationships with developers and non-profit housing sector allies.

Contribute to long-term organizational sustainability, staff training, and succession planning.

Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Coordinate with Co-Executive Directors to secure site and development partners.

Collaborate with Directors on events, education logistics, promotional materials, and governance.

Facilitate partnerships with local organizations for workshops on housing-related issues.

Support building diverse leadership within HOUSE Canada and its affiliates.

Governance & Reporting

Attend and report at internal/external meetings, including staff and Board meetings.

Participate in affiliated Housing Committee Board meetings and sector conferences.

Report monthly to Members and quarterly to the Board of Directors.

Support event sponsor ships, grant writing, and all fundraising-related activities and reporting.

Assist in the development of funding applications for housing and community initiatives.

Managerial & Administrative Duties

Participate in staff management, evaluations, and adherence to HOUSE policies.

Maintain accurate timekeeping and respond promptly to inquiries.

Ensure smooth internal communication and compliance with reporting procedures.

Maintain a strong understanding of HOUSE Canada’s mission, model, and programs.

Travel occasionally to visit Member-Affiliates.

Represent the organization professionally in all interactions.

Contribute to educational programming and organizational outreach.

Salary: $30/hour + benefits

Travel Expenses (expense-reported travel, public transit…) covered.

Barring benefits enrollment, a health allowance will be provided.
