Combat Science:
Warrior Arts of Asia is a Filipino martial arts and self-defense school (Arnis/Kali/Eskrima) founded in 2003 and based in Toronto, Canada. The school is dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Filipino Martial Arts while making training accessible and practical for everyday self-defense.

In addition to martial arts training, Combat Science offers trauma‑informed self‑defense programs rooted in Empowerment Self‑Defense principles. These programs emphasize choice, consent, boundary‑setting, and accessible strategies for people of all backgrounds and experiences.

Through structured classes and community programs, participants build confidence, physical skill, and situational awareness. The training environment emphasizes respect, cultural appreciation, trauma‑informed practice, and personal growth. Community‑building is central to the organization’s mission, creating a supportive space for learners of diverse backgrounds.

Role Description

The Marketing & Community Outreach Assistant is a hybrid volunteer role, combining in‑person activities in Toronto with remote, flexible work‑from‑home tasks. The volunteer will support Combat Science in promoting classes, events, trauma‑informed self‑defense workshops, and community programs through social media assistance, email updates, and basic marketing materials.

Day‑to‑day responsibilities may include researching local community groups and events, supporting outreach campaigns, responding to general inquiries, and helping maintain organized contact lists. In‑person involvement may include assisting at community events, demonstrations, school visits, or information booths, as well as gathering feedback from participants.

All outreach and communication should reflect the school’s trauma‑informed, empowerment‑based approach, ensuring messaging is welcoming, culturally grounded, and sensitive to the diverse lived experiences of participants. The assistant will collaborate closely with instructors and organizers to ensure all communications align with the school’s mission, values, and cultural focus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with creating and posting social media content that highlights classes, events, cultural programming, and trauma‑informed self‑defense initiatives
  • Support email updates, newsletters, and basic marketing materials
  • Research local community groups, schools, and events for outreach opportunities
  • Help maintain contact lists, outreach logs, and communication records
  • Respond to general inquiries in a warm, trauma‑informed, and professional manner
  • Participate in in‑person outreach activities
    , including community events, demonstrations, school visits, and information booths
  • Gather participant feedback to help improve programming and engagement
  • Ensure all communications reflect Combat Science’s cultural mission, trauma‑informed values, and community‑centered approach
Qualifications
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    , with the ability to engage respectfully with diverse community members, partners, and participants
  • Customer service or community outreach experience (or interest), with a welcoming, trauma‑informed presence
  • Research skills to identify potential community partners, events, and outreach opportunities
  • Interest in or openness to learning about Filipino martial arts, self‑defense, trauma‑informed practice, and related cultural contexts
  • Basic familiarity with social media, email platforms, or simple marketing tools (e.g., Canva, Mailchimp, Meta Business Suite) is an asset
  • Ability to attend in‑person activities in Toronto and manage additional tasks independently from home
  • Organizational skills, reliability, and a collaborative attitude
    ; prior volunteer or community engagement experience is helpful but not required
Time Commitment
  • 2–4 hours per week, or as required. Including occasional in‑person events.
