Our client is a registered charity and non-profit organization, dedicated to supporting women and their children who are experiencing gender-based violence, homelessness, and unique circumstances. For over 50 years, they have provided vital services including emergency shelter support, transitional housing, and community outreach programs. Rooted in feminist, trauma-informed, and client-centered practices, they are committed to empowering and engaging with women and their families to rebuild their lives.

Through advocacy, they help individuals move toward safety, stability, and independence.

WHY YOUR ROLE MATTERS

The Shelter Manager will report directly to the Program Director as a key member of their management team. In this critical role, you will oversee day‑to‑day shelter operations, lead shelter staff, and contribute to the development of programs that best serve women and their children in the community. This is more than a leadership role, it is an opportunity to create a meaningful impact in the lives of women and their families.

OPERATIONS

& PROGRAM SUPPORT
  • Manage day‑to‑day emergency shelter operations to ensure effective service delivery, support case management processes and respond to crises as required.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director or designate to develop and implement short‑ and long‑term program goals in alignment with funder requirements and strategic priorities.
  • Assist in the development of new services and programming for women and children based on emerging community needs.
  • Conduct investigations into internal client complaints and see through resolutions in accordance with the organization's reporting policy.
STAFF MANAGEMENT & SUPPORT
  • Supervise frontline staff and shelter personnel to ensure efficient shelter operations and organize and facilitate regular team meetings.
  • Provide regular coaching and performance evaluations for staff and support development through training opportunities and a professional growth program.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date files and conduct regular audits of all supervision and performance management files.
  • Mediate workplace conflicts when necessary.
HUMAN RESOURCES
  • Participate in the recruitment of shelter personnel, onboarding, training of staff, placement students, and volunteers, and oversee timecard compliance.
  • Address disciplinary issues and participate in grievance procedures in line with union guidelines.
FACILITIES OVERSIGHT
  • Oversee day‑to‑day facility operations in collaboration with the maintenance team and external contractors, ensuring timely response to repairs, maintenance requests, health and safety concerns, compliance with public health, fire safety, and accessibility standards.
  • Monitor shelter occupancy and physical resources to ensure adequate space and supplies for client needs.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee shelter‑related expenses, including petty cash and Personal Needs Account (PNA) reconciliation.
  • Ensure all policy documents are up‑to‑date and accessible, submit program statistics and funder reports on schedule, and oversee incident reporting and complete WSIB forms when required.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & SECTOR LIAISON
  • Represent the organization at sectoral tables and advocacy initiatives, promote the organization's shelter programs in the community and maintain positive relationships with partner organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director or designate.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
  • Bachelor of Social Work or a related degree.
  • Current Registration and in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).
  • Minimum 7 to 10 years of progressive experience in the social services sector, including a minimum of 3 to 5 years in a management role.
  • Knowledge of the VAW sector, relevant legislation, and sector best practices.
  • Experience in a unionized work environment is preferred.
  • Strong commitment to anti‑oppression, equity, and social justice principles.
  • Experience in program development, facilitation, and staff training is an asset.
  • Availability for evening and weekend work as needed.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification.
