Opportunity & CommitmentThe Stop is seeking (3) individuals to join its Board of Directors. These individuals will bring expertise, dedication, lived experience, and vision to our organization. We are specifically seeking people with a range of qualifications and interests, including but not limited to Human Resources, Legal, Development (Fundraising), and Board Governance, as well as familiarity with The Stop and ideally, previous board experience.
As a community-based grassroots organization, we encourage applications from a diverse group, particularly those residing in the neighbourhoods surrounding The Stop’s three locations.
The Stop’s Board of Directors is a governance Board. Directors are expected to attend quarterly Board meetings, participate in the work of at least one Committee of the Board between Board meetings, and commit to serving a three-year term, with an opportunity to renew for a second three-year term.
Commitments of Directors- Act with fiduciary responsibility, exercising due diligence in all decision‑making, upholding the organization’s bylaws and always operating in the best interests of the organization.
- Regular attendance at quarterly Board meetings (4:00p – 8:00p), the Annual General Meeting, and meetings of at least one Committee of the Board.
- Prepare for each Board and Committee meeting, including a thorough review of all materials, financials, and committee reports to ensure informed decision‑making.
- Commit to a three-year term with the possibility of renewal for an additional consecutive three-year term.
- Familiarity with activities of The Stop and the larger food security and social services sector in Toronto and further afield.
- Build collaborative working relationships with fellow Board members and the Executive Director.
- Be a donor, participate in fundraising activities, and volunteer to occasionally assist in program delivery.
- Actively recruit support for the Stop from personal and professional networks.
- Be a resource for the Executive Director, or their designate, when called upon to provide particular expertise.
Applicants are reviewed by the Governance and Nominations Committee (GNC) of the Board of Directors, including the Executive Director. We thank all applicants but will only respond to those who are invited to interview. GNC recommendations are voted upon by the Board of Directors, and successful candidates will be invited to join the Board immediately. A slate of all Directors of the Board is presented to the Stop's membership for a vote of acceptance at every Annual General Meeting in November.
