Lab Administrator & Senior Instrument Specialist
At the University of Toronto, the Department of Earth Sciences seeks a Lab Administrator and Senior Instrument Specialist to operate and manage cutting‑edge analytical instrument facilities. The role involves daily operation of high‑precision isotope ratio instruments (e.g., Thermo Delta Q mass spectrometer, gas cavity ring‑down spectrometer, ICP‑MS), training users, developing protocols, and overseeing a trace‑metal clean lab.
Your Responsibilities Will Include- Overseeing day‑to‑day operational needs for one or more labs/workshops
- Assessing needs and contributing to operational plans for laboratories, especially high‑precision isotope ratio instruments and cleanroom protocols
- Troubleshooting lab equipment and coordinating routine maintenance of high‑precision isotope ratio instruments
- Serving as a technical resource for new laboratory protocols, developing manuals and protocols for quality assurance and control
- Training students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, collaborators and other lab users on instrument operation and cleanroom techniques
- Ensuring safe operation of all lab equipment and compliance with safety protocols
- Coordinating the use of lab equipment and resources with internal and external contacts, liaising with stakeholders
- Monitoring finances, scheduling, inventory and resupply to ensure smooth lab operations
- Master of Science in Earth Sciences or related discipline;
Ph.D. preferred - Five years hands‑on experience operating and maintaining high‑precision isotope ratio instruments and laboratory equipment
- Experience managing operational needs of instrumental labs and trace‑metal cleanroom facilities
- Training experience with diverse lab users
- Experience in quality control of high‑precision isotope ratio analyses and cleanroom techniques
- Experience drafting documentation of lab procedures and best practices
- Experience managing lab accounts, ordering inventory and resupply
- Experience teaching lab safety and safe operation of equipment
- Sound technical knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems and component operation
- Strong team‑oriented mindset and ability to work closely with PIs to align workflow with research objectives
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with timely response to inquiries
- Excellent organizational skills (bookkeeping and lab tidiness)
- PhD degree specializing in Geochemistry

Pay Scale: USW Pay Band 15 – $97,348 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $124,491.
