Position: Production Analytical Chemist (ICP-MS)

Our site in Toronto, CA is seeking a Production Analytical Chemist (1st shift) to join our team with in‑depth knowledge of analytical chemistry and strong hands‑on ICPMS experience to perform trace metals analysis at ppb/ppt levels.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and non‑routine analyses using ICP‑MS for trace and ultra‑trace elemental quantification.
  • Conduct sample digestions using strong acids (e.g., HF, HNO₃) followed by ICP‑MS or ICP‑OES analysis on in‑process materials, raw materials, and finished products for release. (First shift: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; limited weekend and/or holiday coverage may be required based on business needs.)
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot Agilent ICP‑MS and ICP‑OES systems.
  • Manage cleanroom supplies and monitor the health of the cleanroom and ultra‑pure DI water system.
  • Utilize advanced knowledge in ICP‑MS method development, validation, and verification.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate methods for comprehensive trace metal analysis (25–55 elements) in complex matrices at sub‑ppb levels.
  • Apply a strong understanding of interferences, matrix effects, and contamination control.
  • Perform instrument calibration, tuning, and performance checks to ensure data integrity.
  • Collaborate on cross‑functional teams as the analytical subject matter expert (SME).
  • Train personnel to analyze samples and perform laboratory tasks.
  • Follow and enhance safety guidelines while maintaining a clean and organized work environment (5S principles).
  • Use appropriate controls for analytical instrumentation, validate and verify data, and take corrective actions when necessary.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in reviewing and evaluating analytical test data and processes to minimize variability, improve robustness, and identify trends or underlying issues.
  • Support quality initiatives related to customers, corporate objectives, quality planning, policy compliance, process improvement, and new business goals.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to achieve these objectives.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in Analytical Chemistry from a recognized top‑ranking university, with 6–8 years of direct ICP‑MS experience, or a Master's degree with an ICP‑MS–relevant thesis and a minimum of 5 years of direct ICP‑MS experience, is required.
  • Academic or research experience involving multi‑element ICP‑MS for ultra‑trace analysis (ppb/ppt levels).
  • Candidate should be comfortable independently operating ICP‑MS and ICP‑OES instrumentation and troubleshooting common analytical and instrument‑related issues without supervision.
  • Proven experience with method development, validation, and QA/QC protocols for multi‑element ultra‑trace analysis is required.
  • Strong understanding of sample preparation techniques (e.g., acid digestion, clean handling, contamination control, microwave digestion).
  • Experienced in interpreting complex datasets, investigating analytical anomalies, identifying outliers, and documenting root causes.
  • Strong knowledge of and demonstrated adherence to the safe handling and disposal of chemicals, with the ability to maintain a clean and safe workspace.
  • Ability to compile and present data effectively to support continuous improvement, method development/validation, and other projects.
  • Ability to maintain instrumentation, tools, chemicals, and consumables required for testing, and to effectively troubleshoot and resolve hardware or software issues.
  • Experience documenting, processing, transferring, and reviewing analytical data to ensure completeness, conformity, traceability, and validity, while supporting production and internal/external customer needs; take corrective action when necessary.
  • Strong ability to multitask, manage time effectively, and balance independent and team‑based work.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and organizational skills; strong dexterity, good hand–eye coordination, and the ability to safely perform routine, repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to travel to US, travel 15%.
