Purpose:
The Contract Painter Grade 1 is responsible for preparing and painting all Zoo assets, and maintenance of the physical plant. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.
CoreRole Responsibilities:
- Prepares various surfaces such as, wood, metal, masonry, concrete, drywall and compositions for finishing or painting.
- Required to mix colours or tints for paint or stains.
- May be required to apply wall coverings.
- Some elevated work requiring use of ladders, scaffolding, zoom boom and elevated platforms.
- Operates power tools and specialized painting equipment.
- In the absence of the Painter Gr.2, this position may be required to perform lead hand duties.
- Performs all duties of this trade in compliance with municipal, provincial, or federal requirements and within standards set by the Toronto Zoo.
- Assist with and communicate details regarding contractor work on site as it pertains to the area including, but not limited to, projects put forth through the Project Management Office.
- Respond to and communicate details regarding emergency situations while on site as it pertains to the area and Toronto Zoo policies.
- Follows all policies and branch instructions.
- Attend appropriate training courses as required.
Skills:
- Must have completed high school, OSSD, or equivalent.
- Must have a minimum of 5 years’ proven experience in the same or similar position.
- Must possess an active 404C (Commercial Painter) Journeyperson trade license valid in the province of Ontario.
- Knowledge of modern methods and technology of the painting trade and possess a thorough knowledge of current paint products and related materials.
- Ability to mix and match paints and stains.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of airless spray equipment an asset.
- Familiar with the use and maintenance of pressure washer, ladders, scaffolds and various safety and personal protection equipment.
- Ability to read architectural, mechanical and schematic drawings would be an asset.
- Working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code is an asset.
- Must have Working at Heights, Fall Arrest and Elevated Work Platforms Certificates.
- Must be capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position, including the ability to perform the following functions:
Standing, gripping, reaching (both above and below the shoulder), standing, walking, sitting, climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, and twisting. - Must have ability to work in changing climatic conditions.
- Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills.
- Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation.
- Must possess an unrestricted Class G driver’s license valid in the Province of Ontario along with a good driving record.
- Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems.
- Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays as scheduled.
- Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
- Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position.
