Position Summary

Under general supervision, the General Maintenance Worker performs avariety of skilled manual tasks and duties in support of various general maintenance services provided by the Facilities Management Department but not limited to plumbing, architectural, structural, electrical, and mechanical thatmay include, installs, repairs, to maintain building components and equipment,utilizing power and hand tools, on any of the Polytechnic Campuses provided.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinates, acting as point of contact and organizing service providers and acquiring quotes, procure resources and get approval to proceed from respective management, for needed contractors called by facilities or other departments to provide various services to the polytechnic.
  • Provides plumbing, mechanical and electrical maintenance and repairs (emergency and preventative), as requested and required for polytechnic facilities.
  • Provides skilled trades as requested and required to perform repairs or other duties. Includes changing filters or fan belts, preparing HVAC systems for operation or winterization.
  • Helps with building automation coordination efforts, accessing light, blinds or HVAC system to change parameters and settings for occupants needs.
  • Makes recommendations to the Coordinator or Campus Manager on required material and equipment purchases to perform the above tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational and Experience Requirements
  • Two-year Certificate of Apprenticeship in General Maintenance or other related field.
  • Completion of Locksmithing Courses – The Association of Ontario Locksmiths is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ practical, related work experience in tasks associated with repair/maintenance of buildings and equipment, in industrial, commercial, or institutional environments.
Skills and Attributes
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and execute own work.
  • Must adhere to policies and procedures as set out in various manuals, i.e., safety information (WHIMIS), Building Codes, material, and equipment specifications, etc.
  • Good judgment and accuracy; attention to detail and safety.
  • Ability to stoop, bend and work in tight spaces; ability to lift over 20 kg or 44 lbs. (i.e., machinery components, motors, ladders etc.).
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, teamwork, and interpersonal skills at a professional level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to uphold the polytechnic’s priorities on equity, diversity, inclusion and Indigenization (EDII).

Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.

  • The Polytechnic requires proof of degrees, credentials or equivalencies from accredited regional or federal post-secondary institutions and/or their international equivalents. Credentials may require validation at the time of interviews or offer.
