About the Position
Reporting to the Senior School Music Teacher and Curriculum Leader, you will be responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing a variety of musical instruments used by students and staff. This includes band, string, and percussion instruments, ensuring they remain in safe and optimal working condition for educational and performance purposes.
The Instrument Repair Technician will diagnose mechanical issues, perform routine maintenance and repairs, and recommend cost-effective solutions to extend the lifespan of instruments. This position may be particularly suitable for a freelance instrument repair technician or an advanced student currently completing studies in instrument repair and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
Inspect, assess, and repair band, string, and percussion instruments.
Remove dents and perform minor structural repairs on brass and woodwind instruments.
Carry out soldering and brazing repairs as required.
Repair and adjust valves, keys, pads, springs, and other instrument mechanisms.
Perform preventative maintenance to ensure instruments remain in good working order.
Assist with basic repairs and maintenance of string instruments, including bridges, pegs, and fittings.
Support repairs and maintenance of percussion instruments and related equipment.
Maintain accurate records of repairs completed and recommend replacement parts or equipment when necessary.
Ensure repairs are completed efficiently, safely, and cost-effectively.
Assess instrument damage and determine whether repairs are required due to normal wear and tear or negligent use, documenting findings and providing recommendations to support cost control and accountability.

Knowledge of the technical construction and repair of band, string, and percussion instruments.
Experience performing instrument repairs, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Proficiency in dent removal, soldering, valve repairs, key adjustments, and related repair techniques.
Ability to learn and apply repair methods for a wide range of musical instruments.
Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and manage assigned repair projects.
Previous experience as an instrument repair technician is an asset.
Enrollment in or completion of a recognized instrument repair program is considered an asset.
