This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Teacher builds positive, nurturing relationships with children while fostering cooperative relationships with parents and caregivers. They promote and support the potential of all youth in programs and facilitate peer‑to‑peer connections as part of the overall program experience.
The Teacher provides direction for the children in the classroom, implements program curriculum, and ensures a quality experience that focuses on building achievement, belonging, and healthy relationships among youth, families, and the community.
- Nurtures children through purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging among youth and families.
- Maintains full understanding of licensing regulations (Title 22) and ensures assigned location operates in full compliance whenever assigned to a licensed site.
- Steps in as individual in charge when the Site Director is not present during program hours as assigned.
- Maintains close visual supervision of a group of assigned children, following required ratios based on specific program. Provides oversight and guidance to Teacher Aide as assigned.
- Ensures no child is left unsupervised and no staff is alone with a child at any time.
- Helps children manage behavior using a positive approach, including proactive strategies, redirection, and constructive discipline with natural and logical consequences.
- Actively supports the YMCA’s commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) where appropriate.
- Plans and implements program curriculum and activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with the YMCA values and established guidelines.
- Adheres to program standards including safety, cleanliness, and equipment maintenance; maintains required program records in accordance with Title 22 regulations, funding terms, and YMCA expectations.
- Conducts ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child; communicates with supervisor regarding child development.
- Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents; engages parents as volunteers and connects them to the YMCA.
- Attends and participates in family events, program activities, staff meetings, and trainings.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures related to medical, disciplinary, child abuse prevention, and emergency situations.
- Understands and complies with federal, state, and local regulations and YMCA policies at all times.
- Maintains positive relationships with parents, YMCA team members, and community partners.
- Models relationship‑building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
- Attends staff meetings and training sessions as required.
- Upholds YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management.
- Demonstrates the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Fairness) and the YMCA Core Values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility.

- Infant: 1 Teacher to 4 infants; 1 fully qualified Teacher & 2 aides to 12 infants.
- Toddler: 1 Teacher to 6 toddlers; 1 fully qualified Teacher & 1 aide to 12 toddlers.
- Preschool: 1 Teacher to 12 children; 1 partially qualified Teacher & 1 aide to 15 children; 1 fully qualified Teacher & 1 aide to 15 children.
