Nova Solvers is a U.S. engineering and technology company developing advanced imaging and sensing systems for government and defense missions. We are an ambitious team of industry-leading spacecraft engineers, designing, building, and qualifying complete, end-to-end space systems in-house — from avionics and payloads to power and control — with a focus on speed, reliability, and mission readiness.
Role OverviewWe are seeking a Spacecraft Power & Electrical Systems Engineer to lead the architecture, design, and qualification of spacecraft electrical power systems and ground electrical equipment. This is a principal-level, hands-on leadership role for an engineer who has personally designed and released flight-qualified power electronics, batteries, and harnesses, and can drive spacecraft electrical systems from concept to orbit. You’ll work directly with the Chief Engineer, firmware developers, and other subsystem leads to deliver reliable, manufacturable, and testable hardware for flight and ground systems.
CoreResponsibilities
- Lead spacecraft Electrical Power Subsystem and overall electrical system architecture, including regulation, distribution, protection, and control.
- Develop power budgets, load analyses, and energy balance models for all mission phases.
- Define and manage electrical requirements, interfaces, and ICDs across spacecraft and ground systems.
- Ensure compliance with safety, EMI/EMC, derating, and space qualification standards.
- Design and release power cards, DC/DC converters, and battery management electronics in Altium Designer.
- Architect and build ground electrical systems such as power simulators, test racks, and load banks.
- Design high-reliability harnesses per MIL and NASA standards with focus on manufacturability and maintainability.
- Apply design-for-manufacturability and design-for-test principles to streamline integration and production.
- Collaborate with fabrication houses and PCB assembly suppliers to ensure proper manufacturing, quality control, and cost optimization.
- Lead part selection and sourcing for power electronics, batteries, sensors, and connectors based on environmental, performance, and reliability constraints.
- Evaluate and qualify radiation-tolerant, radiation-hardened, and automotive-grade components suitable for space and defense applications.
- Interface with suppliers, distributors, and manufacturers to manage lead times, obsolescence, and alternate sourcing.
- Maintain part traceability and compliance with ITAR, AS9100, and government sourcing requirements.
- Conduct bench-level bring-up, verification, and debugging using oscilloscopes, DMMs, E-loads, PSUs, and specialized test racks.
- Perform certification-level debugging, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions for electrical and system-level anomalies.
- Support environmental testing (vibration, thermal vacuum, EMI/EMC) and qualification of flight hardware.
- Collaborate with firmware engineers on validation of embedded power control logic and hardware/software integration.
- Serve as the technical lead for power and electrical systems, mentoring junior engineers and technicians.
- Lead design reviews, risk assessments, and supplier evaluations.
- Generate and maintain schematics, block diagrams, test procedures, verification reports, and configuration documentation.
- Establish and uphold Nova Solvers internal electrical design standards, QMS documentation, and flight hardware processes.
- B.S. or M.S. in Electrical, Computer, or Aerospace Engineering (or related field).
- 5-10+ years of experience designing, building, and testing spacecraft or high-reliability electrical systems.
- Proven experience designing and releasing battery systems, power conversion cards, distribution units, and ground electrical hardware.
- Deep proficiency in Altium Designer (schematic capture, PCB layout, library control).
- Strong understanding of Li-ion battery management, DC/DC converter design, and power distribution architectures.
- Experience selecting and qualifying radiation-tolerant, hardened, or automotive-grade components.
- Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, E-loads, PSUs, and precision instruments for…
