Sr. Lead Engineer – Industrial Turbo machinery
Garrett Motion, building on a legacy of over 70 years, is a leading technology company that designs, manufactures, and sells advanced turbocharging, compression, and high‑speed electric motor technologies for mobility and industrial markets.
The company’s Garrett Advancing Motion (GTX) Compression GBE is developing new centrifugal compressors for industrial applications. We are expanding our Torrance, California team to launch these products into production and need a senior engineer to lead the development effort.
As a Sr. Lead Engineer, you will manage a cross‑functional team, drive product launch, and collaborate directly with customers and internal stakeholders to bring new turbo machinery technologies to market.
Responsibilities- End‑to‑end product ownership, meeting functional requirements for performance, reliability, quality, cost, and timing to satisfy customer specifications.
- Accountable for internal and external APQP on the full bill of materials.
- Single point of contact to customers for launch activities.
- Lead and prioritize project team work to achieve project objectives, including prototypes, ODT, PPAP, and SOP.
- Lead designers, development engineers, and secure resources from SMEs.
- Coordinate with design (2D/3D), simulation (CFD, FEA, etc.), manufacturing, and suppliers to create production‑viable components.
- Define FMEA, execute DVP&R by preparing prototype hardware, testing, analysis, and summary.
- Support development of process documents and capture lessons learned.
- Drive field or launch issue resolution using root‑cause analysis tools (e.g., 8D, 5
WHY, Ishikawa, Knowledge Card). - Generate value‑engineering ideas to reduce costs in design, materials, and processes.
- Initiate and execute benchmarking activities related to the component and discipline.
- Support hiring, onboarding, and UCP process for the team.
- Accountable for team performance, including performance evaluations and talent development.
- Report major gaps in simulation tools, knowledge, and product gaps to GBE and Domains.
- Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- 7+ years of experience in product development and/or launch into production.
- Direct customer interface experience.
- Leadership of multi‑skilled project teams.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in a global organization.
- 10–20% travel to manufacturing or customer sites.
- Fluent in English.
- Team player with growth mindset, customer focus, and strong sense of urgency.
- Experience with refrigerant or air compressor systems.
- Knowledge of safety certification (UL, CE, etc.).
- Experience in turbo machinery, mechanical design, or testing.
- Experience in high‑speed electric motors and hydrodynamic bearings.
- Experience with casting, machining, and assembly of hardware.
- Proficiency in 3D design tools.
- Six Sigma GB certification.
Salary range: $157,000 – $196,300. The starting rate may vary based on factors such as position, education, training, and experience.
