Transit Senior Mechanic

The City of Torrance is recruiting for a Transit Senior Mechanic to be part of the Torrance Transit Team! Torrance Transit System (TTS) is a municipal transportation agency that serves the public in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. Our network consists of twelve (12) fixed routes that extends to many areas outside of the City of Torrance, including the neighboring cities of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Carson, Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, El Segundo, Lawndale, Lomita, Compton, Wilmington, Harbor City and the City of Los Angeles including all unincorporated areas under the jurisdiction of Los Angeles County.

Torrance Transit is looking for experienced and skilled Transit Senior Mechanic to diagnose, maintain, and repair Transit vehicles. Torrance Transit Senior Mechanics remove, replace, rebuild, overhaul, and tune major bus and transit vehicle operating systems. This position uses computer aided diagnostic equipment and reads and interprets diagnostic codes, maintenance manuals, electrical diagrams, and vehicle emission control standards. This individual enters repair orders and keeps maintenance records of time spent, materials and parts used and type of work performed in automated systems;

provides technical direction and training to Transit Mechanics and Transit Equipment Attendants; and performs related work as required.

Note:

Must provide own mechanic hand tools, up to one (1) inch, to perform job duties and be available to work weekends, day, and night shifts.

Qualification Guidelines

Experience and Education Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the knowledge and skills required is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Four (4) years of experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic with at least two (2) years as a bus mechanic. Successful completion of a six-month full-time training program from an accredited school in automotive/truck maintenance and repair may be substituted for up to two (2) years non-bus experience performing repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting of transit vehicles utilizing digital electronics and microprocessors.

License and/or Certificates A valid Class B California driver's license is required. Successful completion of ASE certification tests (H) Series Transit Certifications in H1-- Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), H3-Drive Train, H4-Brakes, H5-Suspension/Steering, H6-Electrical/Electronics, H7 - Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and H8 - Preventive Maintenance and Inspection (PMI); or ASE-Certified Master Transit Bus Technician is highly desirable. Successful candidates will possess the following:

  • Journey level transit mechanic experience
  • Knowledge of current technology such as:
    • Alternative Fuels / Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
    • Hybrid Vehicle / Electric Vehicles
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent judgment; and
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in (H) Series Transit Certification or Certified Master Transit Bus Technician.
