Sanitation Equipment Operator – City of Torrance (Public Works Department – Sanitation Division)
Position OverviewThe Sanitation Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy vehicle equipment to collect & dispose of solid waste, recyclable commodities, and green waste. Operators drive side, front, or rear loading and/or roll‑off trucks on assigned routes according to established schedule. Operators inspect equipment daily, maintain mileage, weight, route, vehicle inspection, and service records, provide public information on waste removal policies, procedures, and schedules, and respond to complaints.
Work schedule is 10 hours a day, four days a week (4/10 schedule).
- Safely operate side, front, or rear loading and/or roll‑off trucks on assigned routes.
- Inspect equipment daily to ensure safe operation.
- Maintain mileage, weight, route, vehicle inspection, and service records.
- Provide the public with information on refuse, recyclable, and green waste removal policies, procedures, and schedules, and respond to complaints.
Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills includes formal or informal education ensuring the ability to read and write at a necessary level and one year of responsible experience operating construction, agricultural, or heavy vehicular equipment and/or refuse trucks.
License and CertificatesPossess and maintain a valid Class B California Driver's License without any air brake restrictions and medical certification.
Preferred Qualifications- At least one year experience operating heavy vehicular equipment.
- Refuse and recycling collection experience.
- No driving points for at least one year.
- Ability to work effectively with coworkers.
- Good customer skills and public interaction.
- Ability to work overtime on a 4/10 schedule.
