Apprentice Relief Bus Operator

This training program is designed for individuals with no prior commercial passenger transportation driving experience and who do not possess a commercial license. It is offered by the City of Torrance’s Transit Department.

• Six‑month paid classroom and behind‑the‑wheel training program
• City contribution toward health insurance
• Accumulation of paid sick leave after 90 days of employment
• Promotion to Relief Bus Operator after successful performance in six months, with starting pay $23.97 per hour
• Opportunity to advance to full‑time Bus Operator in approximately one year, starting $27.24 per hour
• Shift different pay for night shifts and overtime availability
• Ongoing training and operation of the all‑green fleet
• Upon completion of the apprenticeship, pay as a Relief Bus Operator ranges from $25.81 to $27.11 per hour (part‑time, up to 35 hours per week) plus pension benefits; full‑time Bus Operator pay ranges from $29.34 to $35.68 per hour plus full benefits

• At least two (2) years of driving experience in California with a safe driving record
• Driver’s license held by an individual at least 21 years old
• Current DMV K‑4 driving record dated within the last thirty days
• Availability to work various shifts on weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays
• Minimum six (6) months of customer service experience or work that involves contact with the public, with strong people skills
• Steady and stable work history demonstrating a strong work ethic, dependability, and reliability
• No prior commercial passenger transportation driving experience (required)
• Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) from the DMV is preferred but not required
• Driving record screening criteria must be met: no more than one moving violation, no administrative suspension or revocation for DUI, and no traffic accidents reported (if an accident is reported and not at fault, acceptable proof must be provided)

• Six‑month apprenticeship includes classroom instruction and behind‑the‑wheel training
• City contributes toward health insurance for apprentices
• After 90 days, apprentices begin accumulating paid sick leave hours
• Successful apprentices may be promoted to Relief Bus Operator after six months, with pay starting at $23.97 per hour
• After approximately one year, apprentices can be promoted to full‑time Bus Operator, with pay beginning at $27.24 per hour
• Full‑time Bus Operators have the opportunity to earn between $29.34 and $35.68 per hour over time, plus full benefits
