Position: Teacher Registered Apprentice Program 2026-2027

Torrington Public Schools Teacher Registered Apprenticeship Program

This guide outlines the expectations, roles, responsibilities, and collaborative processes for the Torrington Public Schools Teacher Apprenticeship Program in partnership with Central Connecticut State University. It is intended for Teacher Apprentices, Mentor Teachers, School Administrators, University Supervisors, and District Leadership.

Program Vision:
Develop a sustainable pipeline of highly effective educators through intentional mentoring, authentic classroom experience, and close collaboration between Torrington Public Schools and Central Connecticut State University.

Program Goals:

  • Recruit and prepare future educators.
  • Address workforce needs, particularly in mathematics, science, and special education while remaining open to all certification areas.
  • Provide structured mentoring aligned to the Connecticut Common Core of Teaching.
  • Support apprentices in becoming confident, reflective educators.
  • Strengthen long-term educator retention in Torrington.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidate must be recommended by the Educator Preparation Program for Apprenticeship. For all bachelor's degree-granting teacher apprenticeship programs, candidates for apprenticeship must possess at least a high school diploma. For post-baccalaureate teacher apprenticeship programs, candidates must possess at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education. For both bachelor's degree-granting and post-baccalaureate teacher apprenticeship programs, candidates must meet all minimum academic admission requirements as set by the approved Related Instruction Provider.

Candidates must be able to access and navigate all areas of a school and other school district facilities as needed. Candidates for apprenticeship must be 18 years of age and meet all requirements for employment in the Connecticut school district in which they will be employed during their training. Candidates must complete and pass all background checks, screening processes, and fingerprinting processes required for employment.

Prior to official registration as an Apprentice, Candidates must have an Employee Identification Number ("EIN") that is issued by the Connecticut Educator Certification System ("CECS").
