Overview

Fuel Cell Energy is looking for a hands‑on, talented welder to join our dynamic team. The main responsibilities will include interpreting designs, monitoring machinery, and assessing welded components. The successful candidate will have a steady hand and outstanding attention to detail. Performing welding in 1G, 2G, 3G, and 6G positions, using Mig and Tig on carbon steel and stainless steel, plate and pipe, as well as various assembly operations.

Responsibilities
  • Perform hands‑on manufacturing tasks while meeting quantity and quality standards.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions and examine work pieces for defects.
  • Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade.
  • Use aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, and other alloys in welding.
  • Select and install torches, wire, filler rods, and flux according to welding chart specifications.
  • Start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded.
  • Adjust gas flow and pressure to obtain desired flames.
  • Determine required equipment and welding methods, applying metallurgy and geometry knowledge.
  • Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating or warping.
  • Mark or tag material with proper job numbers and other identifying marks.
  • Chip or grind excess weld, slag, or spatter with hand scrapers or power chippers.
  • Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or foreign matter.
  • Align and clamp work pieces, using rules, squares, hand tools, fixtures, jigs, or vises.
  • Develop templates and models for welding projects based on blueprint information.
  • Guide and direct flames or electrodes to straighten, bend, melt, or build up metal.
  • Position and secure work pieces using hoists, cranes, wire, and banding machines.
  • Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors.
  • Clean or degrease parts with wire brushes, grinders, or chemical baths.
  • Grind, cut, buff, or bend edges to ensure snug fit.
  • Repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts.
  • Check grooves, angles, and gap allowances with precision instruments.
  • Operate metal shaping machines such as brakes and shears.
  • Set up and use ladders and scaffolding as necessary.
  • Hammer out bulges or bends in metal work pieces.
  • Operate safety equipment and observe safe work habits.
  • Use fire suppression methods in industrial emergencies.
  • Analyze engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and MSDS.
Education & Experience
  • Minimum HS diploma / GED.
  • Technical education preferred or 2 years of experience.
Ideal Candidate Must Have
  • Welding experience.
  • Ability to use electronically controlled equipment and hand tools.
  • Experience with tooling and assembly utilizing heavy equipment.
  • Experience with quality measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers.
  • Experience with air pallets, forklifts, and overhead crane operations.
Physical Requirements /Working Conditions
  • Lifting, pushing, pulling and placement of manufacturing parts with a weight of at least 25 lbs.
  • Remain on feet and move from area to area within the plant for at least eight (8) hours, with breaks.
  • Perform repetitive motion tasks over a full range of motion with both hands/arms.
  • Work with and around chemicals, including nickel‑based compounds, adhesives, and solvents.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, shoes, hard hats, respirator, and other PPE.
