Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Second Shift Introduction

Position Highlights

  • Shift: Second shift, full time (35 hours per week; bi‑weekly schedule)
  • Schedule:

    Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Thursday 2:00 pm - 10:45 pm (regular days off Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday)
  • PCN: 17558
  • Schedule must be flexible to meet agency needs.

Your Role

In this role, you will work under the general supervision of the Respite Supervisor to provide direct care to individuals with developmental and/or intellectual disability within a Respite Center environment. The Torrington Respite Center can accommodate up to six guests for overnight and extended weekend activities and services. This position includes supervisory responsibilities over lower‑level staff as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Assist doctors and nurses in general care and treatment of individuals
  • Measure doses and administer medications, including insulin injections
  • Document medication administration using appropriate forms
  • Perform narcotic counts
  • Check and may administer intravenous medications
  • Report changes in individuals to doctors
  • Ensure restraints are applied correctly
  • Transcribe doctor medication orders
  • Dispense certain medications in doctor’s absence
  • Apply topical medication
  • Takes and charts temperatures, pulses, and respirations
  • Performs simple nursing treatments
  • Monitors general individual needs, including personal hygiene
  • Reports on individual conditions and behavior
  • Keep the unit safe and healthy
  • Administer enemas or suppositories
  • Perform Foley catheterization care
  • Orients individuals concerning medications and their use
  • May perform emergency first aid
  • May drive individuals to necessary appointments/outings
  • Perform related duties as required
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
  • Knowledge of practical nursing specialties and bedside care
  • Knowledge of various medications used in the care of individuals with physical disabilities and/or intellectual disability
  • Infection control practices
  • Nutrition and diets

Minimum Qualifications
  • License or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut, or a multistate or compact Licensed Practical Nurse license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing nursing services to children, adults, and individuals with autism spectrum disorder
  • Experience communicating with non‑verbal individuals
  • Experience supporting individuals who may exhibit mild to severe challenging behaviors
  • Experience with basic nursing skills, including administering medication and nutrition via G‑Tube or J‑Tube; glucose monitoring; insulin administration; respiratory treatments; colostomy, cecostomy, urostomy care; wound care; and catheterization
  • Experience with infection control practices
  • Experience communicating with interdisciplinary teams and medical providers over the telephone and in written correspondence
  • Experience using Microsoft applications including Outlook, Excel, Teams, and Word
  • Experience supervising staff in supportive roles
Special Requirements

Incumbents may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s license, Public Passenger Endorsement, or Commercial Driver’s license for designated positions.

Working Conditions
