Position: Licensed Practical Nurse FT 1st shift and PT 2nd shift #260611-5415HN-002

Position Overview

Three Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) positions are available at the Northwest Regional Center (Torrington, CT). One position is full‑time first shift, and two positions are part‑time second shift. All positions require working in a continuous operation intermediate care facility that provides comprehensive health and rehabilitation services to individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

Responsibilities
  • Assist doctors and nurses in the general care and treatment of individuals.
  • Measure doses and administer medications, including insulin injections.
  • Document medications using appropriate forms and perform narcotic counts.
  • Check and administer intravenous medications as directed.
  • Report changes in individuals’ conditions to doctors.
  • Ensure restraints are applied correctly and safely.
  • Transcribe doctors’ medication orders.
  • Dispense certain medications in the absence of a doctor.
  • Apply topical medication and perform simple nursing treatments.
  • Take and chart vitals (temperature, pulse, respiration) and monitor personal hygiene needs.
  • Report on individual conditions and behavior.
  • Keep the unit safe and healthy.
  • Administer enemas or suppositories and perform Foley catheterization care.
  • Orient individuals concerning medications and their use.
  • May perform emergency first aid.
  • May transport individuals to appointments or outings as needed.
  • Perform related duties as required by the agency.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of practical nursing specialties, bedside care, and various medications used for individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities.
  • Understanding of infection control practices, nutrition, and medical and laboratory sciences.
  • Interpersonal skills and oral communication, as well as written communication abilities.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and lead staff when required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in Connecticut issued by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing, or hold a Multistate or Compact LPN license with a Connecticut authorization.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one year of LPN experience.
  • Experience providing nursing services to children and adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorder.
  • Experience communicating with non‑verbal individuals.
  • Experience supporting individuals who may exhibit mild to severe challenging behaviors.
  • Experience with basic nursing skills including medication administration, nutrition via G‑tube or J‑tube, glucose monitoring, insulin administration, respiratory treatments, colostomy, ceceostomy, urostomy care, wound care, and catheterization.
  • Experience with infection control practices.
  • Experience communicating with interdisciplinary teams and medical providers over the telephone and in written correspondence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Excel, Teams, and Word.
Special Requirements
  • May be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement, or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
Working Conditions

Incumbents may be required to lift or restrain individuals, may have exposure to communicable or infectious diseases, and may experience risk of injury from assaultive or abusive individuals. Work may also involve exposure to disagreeable conditions.
