GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. WYDOT now seeks a full-time Engineer II located in Torrington, Wyoming. This position is responsible, but not limited to, performing tasks for highway projects from inception through design, construction, and contract completion, under the direction of the Resident Engineer.

- Issues, reviews, comments, and revises plan sets.
- Reviews and approves or rejects project submittals/permits.
- Reviews and updates forms and documentation procedures regarding construction activities and pay quantities.
- Inspects and assures projects/facilities are completed according to plans, specifications, design criteria, and budgetary constraints.
- Compiles and submits engineering recommendations and summaries for designing various projects/facilities.
- Conducts extensive research of existing and evolving technologies.
- Provides technical guidance, advice, and oversight.
- Works in direct contact with contractors and subcontractors daily in the management of projects under construction.
- Deals with landowners, traveling public, local, county, state, and federal government entities.
- Performs field inspections, laboratory testing, materials analysis, and quality control.
- Develops engineering models, conducts studies, makes cost estimates, and submits reports, summaries, and other required documentation.
- Reviews and evaluates the work of assigned engineering technicians.
- Performs inspections and testing to assure the contractor is constructing the project according to plans, specifications, etc.
- Provides the contractor with necessary construction information and interprets plans.
- Calculates and documents quantities for payment to the contractor.
- Examines and verifies numeric data and specifications on source documents by recalculating computations using geometry or trigonometry.
- Resolves geometric and trigonometric problems encountered during detailed drawing creation.
- Reviews construction plans and verifies they meet designated specifications and other requirements.
- Conducts field engineering surveys, including using a level, operating a total station, GPS, and solving problems.
- Checks and verifies accuracy of detailed project drawings and corrects them if necessary.
- Designs preliminary work, calculating land areas, earth forms, circular curves, material quantities, and other measurements.
- Trains other personnel in engineering and surveying, and proper fieldwork documentation techniques.
- Coordinates with contractor, other agencies, and the public when a project impacts them.
- Oversees moderate to major construction projects by documenting pay quantities, directing the schedule of subordinates, and working with a contractor for quality control.
- Ensures materials sampling and testing are performed properly; audits material summaries for QA/QC purposes.
- Prepares water agreements, materials agreements, and other necessary agreements.
Agency Requirements: Must be able to obtain the following certifications/licenses:
- Valid Driver's License
- QC/QA Certification in Soils & Aggregate, Asphalt, and Concrete
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of authoritative reference materials in the field of engineering.
- Knowledge of surveying instruments and measurement and testing equipment.
- Knowledge of complex algorithms in mathematical computer models.
- Knowledge of construction methods, project scheduling, cost estimating, and material quantity takeoffs.
- Knowledge of scientific and technical research practices.
- Knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and practices.
- Knowledge of computers and survey equipment.
- Knowledge of contemporary road construction contracts.
- Knowledge of analyzing situations and developing solutions based on education, experience, policies, and specifications.
