Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Orthopedic Surgery; Spine

Position Summary

The Orthopedic Spine Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) at WashU Orthopedics is an integral clinical leader and valued member of the interdisciplinary Spine team. The role is primarily outpatient across Sunset Hills and Missouri Baptist locations in St. Louis and may include first‑assist duties in the operating room as needed.

The NP or PA will facilitate multidisciplinary care for spine patients from adolescence through adulthood, aiming for outstanding clinical outcomes, an exceptional patient experience, and compassionate care. Successful performance requires collaboration, excellent communication, leadership skills, and the adaptability to navigate changing priorities and clinical protocols while maintaining patient care excellence.

• Delivers comprehensive outpatient spine care across multiple practice locations.
• Supports Spine Surgeons and division needs.
• Supports and guides orthopedic clinical staff across sites.
• Partners with hospital teams, physicians, and Spine leadership to improve patient access and operational throughput.
• Prepares patients for treatment through education, care coordination, and review of clinical needs.
• Facilitates communication between patients, referring providers, and the physician team.
• Promotes an exceptional patient and family experience through compassionate, patient‑centered care.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Master’s degree.

• For NPs:
  Master of Science in Nursing with emphasis in the Nurse Practitioner program.
• Advanced Practical Nurse licensure (or the ability to obtain licensure within three months of hire).
• For PAs:
  Graduate of PA program.
• Current PA licensure to practice in Missouri and/or Illinois (or the ability to obtain within three months of hire).

• Basic Life Support – American Heart Association.
• Basic Life Support – American Red Cross.
• Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) – Illinois or Missouri state licensing bodies (as applicable).
• Certified Nurse Practitioner – Illinois or Missouri state licensing bodies (as applicable).
• Physician Assistant – Illinois or Missouri state licensing bodies (as applicable).

• Prior orthopedic/spine experience.
• Master’s degree – Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Studies.

Grade: S31.

Salary Range: $93,300.00 – $ annually. The base salary within this range will be determined by qualifications, performance, and equitable consideration with other positions in the same department.
