Position Overview
Under direction of the Building Principal, the Paraprofessional assists teachers by performing a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well‑being. Works individually and in small groups to reinforce instruction, monitor performance, and support learning. This position also performs instructional and classroom management supports, as well as related clerical tasks to support teachers and other professional staff in all classrooms or learning environments.

Appoquinimink School District may require you to be trained in Safety‑Care or a similar competency‑based crisis prevention intervention training program as a condition of your continued employment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assists in providing a safe and encouraging learning environment to meet the students' needs, interests, and abilities.
- Demonstrates professionalism, maintains confidentiality, accepts constructive feedback, and promotes an atmosphere that supports student learning.
- Supports classroom instruction by engaging in planning, following teacher‑outlined plans, and working with individual students or small groups.
- Supports classroom assessment by monitoring independent work, collecting academic/behavioral data, and keeping accurate and current records of student progress.
- Supports classroom organization by performing clerical duties, assisting in gathering and developing instructional materials, and maintaining an organized work environment.
- Demonstrates effective teamwork by engaging in problem‑solving, exhibiting flexibility, and cooperating with others.
- Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
- Works continuously toward self‑improvement through active pursuit of professional development activities.
- Implements School Board and school‑based policies and procedures to uphold school regulations.
- Assumes additional responsibilities and performs other duties assigned by the Principal and/or Director of Educational Resources/Executive Director of Teaching and Learning.
- Willingness and ability to work an extended day (for additional pay) and ride the bus to and from school with the assigned student is preferred.
- High school diploma and passing Para Pro scores or a minimum of 60 college credits.
- State of Delaware Para educator Permit required.
- Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, students, administrators, and parents.
- Experience working with students of varying abilities.
- Excellent communication, organization, and computer skills.
- Knowledge of IDEA, 504, and IEPs.
- Criminal background check and tuberculosis testing required.
This position may require frequent bending, walking, running, and lifting objects or equipment up to 50 pounds. Additional demands may include moving wheelchairs, assisting with toileting, feeding, and other daily living activities. Assist with self‑care plans such as toileting, feeding, personal hygiene, dressing, and other daily living activities; physically assist students to engage in activities such as walking or eating, kneel and work on the floor with students, walk for long periods, and assist with physically aggressive behaviors.

The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment and may require the ability to move around the school and classroom.
Pre‑Employment Requirements- All persons employed by the Appoquinimink School District must submit a criminal background check and a tuberculosis test.
- Anyone offered employment must provide proper identification (Social Security Card and Driver's License), documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.A., complete an I‑9 form, and complete paperwork for the Delaware Child Protection Registry.
