Position: Permit Services Supervisor (Permit Processing)

Overview

Pay Schedule XII, Grade 1M, Regular

Schedule:

35 hours per week

A vacancy exists in the Department of Permits, Approvals & Inspections, Permit Processing Section.

Definition of Responsibility

Under general supervision, reviews, processes, and approve building, electrical and plumbing permits.

Essential Functions
  • Accepts applications for building, water, plumbing, and electrical permits.
  • Processes over 50 permits a day.
  • Answers high volume of calls relating to permit applications for building, water, plumbing, and electrical permits or licenses.
  • Explains and answers inquiries and questions from the general public on the permit process, status and fees.
  • Reviews and tracks permit applications
  • Manage the preparation of all necessary documentation for permit submissions, including applications, maps, and legal descriptions.
  • Ensure that all permitting documentation is accurate, complete, and in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Reviews engineering, architectural, and/or development plans as required by a particular permit, license, or statute to determine suitability for acceptance and to determine required technical review.
  • Computes cost of permit, license, or other fee based on established guidelines as determined by content of plans or drawings. Issues building, plumbing, and electrical permits.
  • Prepares plans for further technical review by performing routine preliminary calculations and researching additional information, such as plats, property lines, material specifications, survey or topographical maps, or soil charts.
  • Addressing and resolving revisions, conditions, conflicts, or disputes that arise during the permitting approval process.
  • Prepares cost estimates based on linear footage and other factual information on plans or drawings according to established schedules.
  • Checks calculations performed by others for accuracy
Example of Duties
  • Tracks applications, plans, and drawings through review process.
  • Enters information from applications, plans, or drawings into an automated record keeping system.
  • Assist customers with completing permits online
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor s degree in business administration, public administration, or a related field

Plus

Three years  supervisory experience in the processing and issuance of permits and licenses.

(Additional experience in the processing and issuance of permits and licenses may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years for the required education. Qualifying education beyond a bachelor s degree may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required experience.)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level):

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of permit and license processing. Thorough knowledge of engineering plans and specifications. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, codes, and materials of modern construction. Knowledge of office practices and procedures. Knowledge of the principles and practices of the supervision of office staff.

Skill in the supervision of staff. Skill in the review and analysis of engineering plans and specifications. Skill in the computation of permit fees. Skill in the preparation of written reports and correspondence.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other agencies, and the general public. Ability to learn, interpret, and carry out County and Departmental laws, codes,…
