Responsibilities and Duties

  • Strategic Leadership & Campus

    Collaboration:

    Serve as the university’s lead subject matter expert on student mental health, providing consultation, strategic guidance, and thought leadership to the AVP of SHAW, senior administration, and campus partners.

    Lead campus-wide mental health initiatives and represent the counseling center in university and external forums, complementing the centralized outreach strategy led by the department of health promotion & prevention education.

    Champion the integration and synergy of SHAW services by collaborating on cross-functional initiatives that enhance coordination and create seamless student experiences, while maintaining a primary focus on the counseling center’s role.

    Build and maintain cross-campus partnerships across SHAW, student affairs, academic affairs, and external organizations to strengthen the continuum of care and ensure coordinated approaches to student mental health and wellness.

    Dedicate substantial time to strategic planning, campus partnerships, and thought leadership related specifically to mental health.
Counseling Center Management
  • Direct the operations of the counseling center, ensuring alignment with its mission, strategic priorities, and the broader SHAW vision.
  • Build and sustain a positive organizational culture that fosters initiative, accountability, innovation, and teamwork.
  • Provide direct supervision to the counseling center leadership team and to MCRT clinicians, overseeing program operations in partnership with Towson University police department.
  • Manage budgets, resources, and staffing needs to support high-quality services while aligning expenditures with strategic priorities.
  • Continuously evaluate services and operations, introducing improvements that enhance impact and student outcomes.
Clinical Oversight & Standards
  • Provide strategic oversight of all counseling center clinical services, including crisis intervention, assessment, counseling, treatment, and consultation.
  • Ensure services meet professional standards and comply with ethical, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
  • Lead the development and implementation of innovative, evidence-based service models responsive to a diverse and evolving student population.
  • Maintain a limited clinical caseload to remain engaged with student needs while prioritizing strategic and administrative leadership.
  • Provide expert consultation to campus partners and work closely with the director of health promotion and prevention education to ensure outreach and education efforts reflect current clinical priorities, best practices, and emerging student needs.
  • Direct the development, maintenance, and clinical oversight of all virtual mental health resources, including self-help tools, digital platforms, and counseling center web content, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and cultural responsiveness in collaboration with the assistant director of marketing and communications for SHAW.
  • Oversee risk management and patient complaint resolution processes related to counseling center services.
Training and Clinical Supervision
  • Ensure all elements of the counseling center’s training program meet accreditation standards, align with the center’s mission, and prepare trainees for professional success.
  • Provide supervision to doctoral interns, externs, and unlicensed staff, supporting their clinical growth and professional development.
  • Plan and deliver training seminars and professional development opportunities for trainees and staff.
  • Foster a learning environment that emphasizes clinical excellence, cultural competence, and professional identity development.
  • Stay current on emerging research, best practices, and innovations in college mental health, and actively participate in relevant professional associations to inform program enhancement and staff development.
Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate (Ph.D. or Psy.

    D.) in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, or a closely related field
