Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to maintain the electronic security systems to ensure the safety and security of youth, staff, and citizens of Maryland. The position will be located in Cheltenham, MD and will serve our Southern Maryland and Metro regions. The security systems include but are not limited to video surveillance, detention door systems, keycard access, Code Red system, Guard Tour, fence intrusion systems, intercom systems, and two‑way radios.

This position assists in planning, designing, and developing electronic security systems, providing expert technical advice and guidance, and developing and implementing training. Additionally, the role coordinates vendor management, system documentation, and customer support and training.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plans, designs, and develops new or improves existing electronic security systems, producing electronic security plans to address user needs, hardware, software, integrations, and peripherals.
  • performs in‑depth analysis of electronic security systems to include costs, compatibility with existing hardware and software, and provides recommendations and technical documents; offers expert technical advice and guidance to support electronic security systems for DJS regarding future directions and customization of systems.
  • Coordinates with vendor representatives in the installation of new hardware and software related to the integration and upgrades of electronic security systems; assists with the design, installation, and integration of systems in both small and large scale settings.
  • Develops procedures and standards for electronic security systems and interfaces; creates documentation of all systems, configurations, and end‑user processes; drafts audit documentation as required and assists with audits.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves electronic security system inconsistencies and problems that arise; these issues will be resolved 24 hours a day and may require working evenings and weekends.
  • Performs or coordinates staff training for electronic security equipment as necessary; trains staff on electronic security systems.

This position is eligible to work a hybrid telework schedule as available due to demands in DJS facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Seven years of experience designing, developing, testing, implementing, and maintaining application, communication, database, or operating systems software.

  • Candidates may substitute graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Computer Technology, Management Information Systems, or another information technology‑related field to include coursework in application, communication, database, or operating systems software technology for four years of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and one year of experience designing, developing, testing, implementing, and maintaining application, communication, database, or operating systems software for four years of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute experience operating computer systems; or scheduling, controlling input and output to process data on computer systems; or evaluating, implementing, and maintaining computer hardware and software; or converting data from project specifications by developing program code using generally accepted computer programming languages on a year‑for‑year basis for a high school education.
