The Public Safety Officer enforces university rules and regulations pertaining to parking, conduct and safety. The Public Safety Officer conducts routine security activities to protect university buildings, and property, to safeguard occupants and visitors. This position is classified as Essential personnel and candidates will be required to work various shifts including weekends and holidays.
Responsibilities and Duties- Patrols buildings and grounds, both on foot and in vehicles; alerts police personnel in the event of fire, suspicious condition, destruction of property or other observed criminal activity.
- Conducts detailed, and thorough, physical security checks of campus buildings, including all exterior entrances and internal areas of special concern; reports any unusual conditions and takes appropriate corrective action, including the notification of maintenance personnel to effect repairs; opens and secures buildings at scheduled times; admits service contractors, faculty, staff and authorized students to buildings at scheduled time.
- Maintains all assigned equipment, including vehicles and uniforms, in the manner prescribed by the department.
- Enforces university parking regulations and issues related citations. Testifies in the District Court of Maryland relative to the appeal of citations issued.
- Directs routine traffic and assists in directing traffic at many major special events.
- Maintains pertinent records and stat recording to established systems.
- Aids motorists on the property of the University, including vehicle lockout service and the administration of "hot shots". Responds to routine inquiries from staff, students and visitors pertaining to directions, university regulations and other public relations matter.
- Assists in crowd control and may administer emergency medical aid when certified as a "First Responder". Performs routine security activities during special events including patrolling assigned areas, securing entrances/exits and reporting potential hazards. Communicates over law enforcement radio channels and through computer networks; may operate standard security and office equipment including police communications equipment, alarm systems, and computer systems.
- In the absence of the Police Communications Operator, staffs the Police Communication Center and may perform basic duties and responsibilities of the Police Communications Operator.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
- Possess a valid Maryland driver's license, or equivalent, with less than 5 points.
In addition, applicants must submit to and successfully pass a thorough background investigation. Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Employees in this job class may be subject to pre‑employment and random drug testing.
