Position: Security Officer 1

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Under general supervision, but according to prescribed procedures, the Security Officer is responsible for the safety and protection of patients, visitors, staff, property, buildings and grounds.

  • Makes sure facility has high quality security services to protect people and property.
  • Reports safety concerns, security breaches and unusual circumstances verbally and in writing.
  • Builds, improves and maintains effective relationships with patients, visitors and staff.
  • Answers questions and assists patients, staff and visitors.
  • Answers phones or greets patients, staff, visitors and employees in a professional, welcoming manner.
  • Responds immediately to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
  • Uses electronic dispatch system to generate calls for service and complete reports.
  • Operates equipment including automobile, office equipment, radio, telephone, visitor‑management system, access‑control and CCTV.
  • Contributes to the achievement of department goals and objectives and adheres to policies, procedures, quality and safety standards.
  • Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

  • Proficient in and utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques, ensuring safety, calm and respect on site.
  • Maintains satisfactory attendance and punctuality standard.
  • Neat and professional appearance.
  • Demonstrates ability to understand verbal and written direction, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, including stressful situations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for dealing with patients, visitors and staff.
  • Can handle pressure of high‑volume public.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Current State Driver’s License, maintained throughout employment.
  • Successful completion of post‑hire training course including CPR/RQI, Stop the Bleed and de‑escalation within two weeks of employment.
  • Maintain RQI throughout employment.
  • Possess or obtain Maryland Security Guard license within first 90 days; must file for license within first 2 weeks.
  • EMTALA training to be completed within probationary period before independent work.
  • GBMC Workplace Violence Prevention Training completed within new‑hire period before independent work.
Physical Requirements
  • Stand or walk constantly for up to an entire shift on various surfaces.
  • Climb stairs, ramps or ladders occasionally during shift.
  • Bend/twist at waist/knees/neck to perform various duties.
  • Occasionally lift or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Run as needed.
  • Constant use of upper‑body extremities to perform tasks requiring reaching/handling/fingering while using phone, notepad, writing reports and other administrative tasks.
  • Constant use of eyes (correctable vision to normal level required) to observe, read, interact with public and co‑workers, view security monitors; includes hand/eye coordination.
  • Works in various environments including adverse outdoor conditions such as cold, rain or heat.
  • Constant mental alertness and attention to detail, setting priorities and following up on assignments.
Working Conditions

Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather conditions on a regular basis, with intermittent exposure to unpleasant conditions such as noise, heat, dust, and disease. At any given time, all on‑duty personnel may be required to assist with violent disruptive crisis patients.
