Job Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic Lead – Night Shift performs semi‑skilled general maintenance and preventive maintenance work. As a lead mechanic, this position directs other mechanics in the performance of their assignments. The role is scheduled for the second shift, 3:00 p.m.–11:30 p.m., and may also serve on call.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Daily inspection of all building components and equipment in all assigned buildings; performs comprehensive preventative maintenance and repairs on mechanical systems and structural components.
  • Responds to all related requests and troubleshoots problems; assists area maintenance mechanics on tasks as needed.
  • Serves as lead worker and backup for the Area Maintenance chief; supervises area maintenance mechanics and trains unskilled and semi‑skilled personnel, helping determine work priorities, planning, scheduling, and reviewing work.
  • Inspects mechanical and structural components to ensure operational readiness and safety, determining necessary repairs and obtaining assistance from senior personnel when required.
  • Prepares recurring reports reflecting daily operations and project status; completes and updates logs, charts, and service manuals; prepares estimates of time and material required on assigned tasks; reports deficiencies and safety problems to senior personnel.
  • Ensures adequate supplies, materials and equipment are maintained in assigned areas; operates and maintains tools and equipment of the area where assigned; cleans work area upon completion of assignment.
  • Assists journey‑level trades personnel in skilled maintenance and repair work; assists in new construction and renovations work.
  • Serves in other maintenance areas performing duties as required, including during vacations, weekends or emergencies; performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Four years related work experience, three years of which must have been in the trade area where assigned.

General knowledge and skill in a variety of semi‑skilled building construction or maintenance and repair practices and techniques used in the trade areas; knowledge of safety practices and procedures related to the assigned trade areas. Skill in the use of tools and equipment of the trade; inspection, adjusting, repairs, and replacements to building fixtures and mechanical equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, to communicate effectively, to prepare estimates of time and material required for assigned work;

to apply quality and safety standards; to perform work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment or machinery; to work at heights up to 120 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment and tools for up to 70 lbs; to manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment concurrently; to work in hazardous or confined spaces and adverse weather or temperature conditions;

and to wear and use personal protective equipment.

Applicants may be required to undergo medical inquiries or examinations to determine ability to perform the job. A valid Maryland non‑commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license is required. Selected candidates will be required to receive additional training, including ladder training, confined spaces, heat stress and asbestos training.

Salary and Benefits

Annual salary of $48,138, with a potential 2.5% increase after successful completion of the initial six‑month probationary period. Full university benefits are provided, including annual leave, up to 17 holidays, personal and sick days, excellent health, life and retirement plans, and tuition remission.
