Overview
Vacancies exist in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Utilities. A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination below. Current and future vacancies within this class may be filled from the list of eligible applicants.
All interested transfer and promotional candidates must apply at this time. List all promotions and changes in job duties due to reclassifications as separate work experience on your application, including dates.
Responsibilities- May drive automobile, truck, or other non‑commercial weight vehicle.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Basic knowledge of unskilled manual labor tasks.
- Ability to learn to perform a variety of unskilled and semi‑skilled labor tasks.
- Ability to operate hand and power tools safely.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to read street signs and simple written material.
- Knowledge of labor tasks associated with construction and maintenance of sewers, storm drains, and roads.
- Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.
- Knowledge of applicable County and departmental rules and regulations.
- Skills in the safe operation of tools, equipment, and machines used on the job.
- Ability to apply acquired knowledge to increasingly varied and complex tasks.
- Ability to perform duties independently and work as part of a team.
- Ability to train on equipment and vehicles of higher complexity.
- Ability to complete assigned tasks by established deadlines.
- Ability to complete simple forms.
Possession of a valid license equivalent to a non‑commercial, Class C Maryland driver’s license may be required for some positions.
Proof of Licenses, Certifications, and EducationApplicants must submit proof of licenses, certifications, and education beyond high school. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant’s major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
Examination ProcedureQualified applicants will be assigned a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience as submitted on their applications and supplemental questions.
Conditions of EmploymentSome positions in this classification will be designated as emergency/essential. Employees may be required to work overtime with little or no advance notice.
Physical and Environmental ConditionsThe work requires heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and operation of hand and power tools and equipment. Some work involves exposure to hazardous conditions such as standing in traffic, working in trenches, and adverse weather. Some duties may require travel between work sites.
Employment Background InvestigationSelected applicants must successfully complete an employment background investigation including criminal background, education, and fingerprint check.

SalaryAnnual salary review with step increases at anniversary based on performance. Cost‑of‑living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated. Longevity increases may be granted upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service.
