Embedded Software Principal Engineer (AI)
Job OverviewAs a Embedded Software Principal Engineer (AI), you’ll be part of the Embedded Software Development Team working as a Hybrid employee. The role involves close collaboration with Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, Reliability, and Regulatory teams. The candidate should be self‑starting and experienced in low‑level embedded firmware design, AI development, AI regulation, and debugging.
Responsibilities- Lead the design and implementation of scalable, testable, and maintainable architectures that integrate advanced AI algorithms and autonomous system components into full‑stack solutions for operational systems.
- Help define and implement policies and procedures for autonomous and AI implementations.
- Act as primary point of contact for certification with the appropriate regulatory agencies for autonomous and AI‑enabled products.
- Provide technical oversight of suppliers producing autonomous and AI‑enabled products.
- Support real‑time implementations of autonomy in embedded, virtual, and simulated environments.
- Develop and maintain high‑quality code for simulation, visualization, and full‑stack development for incremental delivery cycles.
- Develop software test plans, procedures, processes, and reports for AI and autonomous system software.
- Provide training and mentoring to junior team members.
- BSEE, BSCS, BSCE or equivalent (4 years) from an accredited computer/electrical engineering college.
- 12+ years of experience with electronics, software development, and embedded firmware.
- Leadership experience in projects implementing AI and autonomy algorithms in physical systems.
- Hands‑on experience in embedded system (bare metal) design.
- Extensive knowledge of developing embedded 8/16/32‑bit microcontrollers in C, C++, or ASM.
- Strong understanding of embedded software concepts: hard real‑time processing, process scheduling, cooperative multitasking, interrupt processing, race conditions, RTOS.
- System‑level orientation and strong ownership in accomplishing objectives.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to influence the organization and communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Expertise with motor control techniques, including sensor‑based and sensorless trapezoidal control.
- Experience with closed‑loop control and feedback systems for AC and BLDC motors.
- Experience with ARM architectures; assembly language coding a plus.
- Experience with lithium‑ion battery powered systems.
- Graduate or doctoral degree in Computer/Software Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field.
- Strong knowledge of quality assurance methodology and tools.
The base pay range for this position in Maryland is $134,300–$231,725 per year. Pay is market-based and may vary by knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign‑on payment may be provided. Full‑time employees receive a comprehensive benefits package, including:
