Job Title

Under general direction, performs advanced professional field and office engineering work in connection with the design, construction and coordination of Public Works projects; supervises engineering staff; and does related other work as required. This is the advanced, registered level in the engineering series.

Examples Of Duties

Plans and assigns work, reviews engineering projects completed or in progress; trains, supervises and evaluates staff.

Prepares and/or directs the preparation of plans, estimates, maps, property descriptions, detailed drawings and specifications; makes preliminary designs and estimates for determining budgetary needs for construction and design projects.

Makes complex engineering analysis and prepares reports and estimates in connection with engineering and budgetary aspects of assigned projects.

Reviews and supervises checking of construction plans and subdivision maps and plans; inspects or initiates inspection of projects during construction and upon completion to determine conformance with standards and specifications.

Meets with other departments, agencies or individuals regarding plans, problems and joint projects.

Assists in the preparation of Department budget.

Typical Qualifications

Experience:

Two years as an Engineer III or equivalent. Six years of experience, with two years at management level.

Education:

Graduation with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or closely related field from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Certificate:
Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer as issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. License:
Possession of a valid California driver's license.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of advanced principles and practices of engineering; methods and materials used in planning, design, construction and maintenance of varied projects including road, bridge, transportation, water, waste water, drainage, solid and hazardous waste disposal; principles of supervision, program planning and budgeting. Ability to independently apply required engineering knowledge in varied work assignments; resolve technical problems of considerable difficulty; assign, train, supervise and evaluate professional, paraprofessional and technical engineering personnel and their work;

learn and utilize a wide variety of computer applications and apply to assigned projects; establish and maintain effective working relations with others; express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; prepare long-range programs and budgets.
