Summary

This faculty member will be responsible for working in conjunction with the Communications Academic Area in

teaching basic/developmental writing courses ENG 99 (Introduction to College Writing) and ENG 108 (Critical Reading Strategies); plus other developmental and college composition courses as needed.

Additionally, this faculty member will teach with innovative pedagogy in the classroom; deliver lectures to students which stimulate class discussions and productive learning; advise students on curriculum, academic programs, employment and career goals; participate in college orientation and advising sessions; support and monitor appropriate student placement; design and implement innovative assessment methods for basic/developmental writing courses as well as participate in college-wide general education assessment;

support and contribute to the growth and development of the academic area; help train and advise English course TAs and provide faculty professional development in working with underprepared writers. Serve on and/or coordinate the Developmental Education Committee,

The position will require flexible scheduling with the possibility of teaching evening, weekend, or online classes. The successful candidate will be skilled at nurturing and supporting students while simultaneously maintaining high academic expectations and standards. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to individualize learning are essential for reaching out to underprepared students. Flexibility is important in this position.

The ideal candidate will display a commitment to the community college with a willingness to contribute to the college mission by serving on committees and assuming a leadership role within the Communications Academic Area.

Qualifications

Required

* A Master's Degree in English, English Composition, Composition and Rhetoric, Developmental English, or a master's degree in a related field plus 18 graduate credits in English

* College-level teaching experience in basic or developmental writing courses

Preferred

* 3 years of experience teaching college-level composition

* Training and coursework in adult learning and/or learning strategies

* Coursework in rhetoric

* Coursework in teaching composition and/or composition theory

* Experience teaching students with learning disabilities

* Experience teaching writing at the secondary level

* Experience designing and implementing assessment methods for college-level developmental courses

* Evidence of successful experience working with underprepared college students

* Experience training other faculty in working with underprepared writers

* Experience in curriculum development at the college level

* Experience working in a college-level writing center

Essential Responsibilities

Provide classroom/lab instruction to students and developtheoryincluding but not limited to online,accelerated, livestream, hybrid and face-to-face formats

Daily

* Teaches basic/developmental writing courses.

* Teaches college-level, and co-requisite college-level courses

* Advises underprepared students, as well as faculty who need help in working with underprepared writers.

* Assists with training and advising English course TAs for working with basic/developing writers.

* Participates in curriculum and course development, revision, evaluation and assessment.

* Demonstrates an interest in using current and emerging technologies in the classroom.

* Employs a range of suitable strategies to foster student learning and assessment of the same.

* Stimulates class discussions and other active learning activities.

* Helps students make relevant and innovative learning connections to the College's general education outcomes through class interactions and course work.

* Responds to students' inquiries, concerns, and requests for feedback on drafts and revisions in a timely manner.

* Maintains accurate records of individual student progress in all courses.
