Special Education Transitional Aide
Position: 7.0 hours/day, 6 weeks, $19.31 per hour
Location: Traverse Heights Elementary School, Traverse City, Michigan
Starting Date: Sep 8, 2026
General SummaryThe Special Education Aide Substitute assists Special Education students in the classroom and reports to the principal or designated teacher. Compensation is $19.31 per hour.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities- Assist special education students with academics in regular education classrooms.
- Assist students in categorical classrooms.
- Assist special education students in physical education, music, and art, and at lunch and recess as needed.
- Participate in planning meetings and IEPCs as requested.
- Assist with small group non-direct instruction.
- Assist with large group non-direct instruction.
- Assist with physical challenges (wheelchairs, scribes, daily life skills, communication devices).
- Work in areas of self‑help (toileting, diapering, dressing, feeding, dispensing medications per district policy).
- Monitor behavior of students on behavior plans and others as needed under the direction of the special education teacher.
- Serve as a witness for medication administration if requested.
- Attend training or in‑services.
- Accompany special education students on field trips.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
Required
- Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma; previous college credit, Work Keys certification, or college degree preferred.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school personnel.
- Previous experience working with children.
- Ability to care for, supervise, and nurture children.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to follow directions.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to assist with maintaining records of student progress.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to resolve conflict.
- Dependable, reliable, and protective of sensitive/confidential information.
- Willingness to attend training.
- Ability to remain calm under stressful situations.
- Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis and maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
- Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, and use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying.
- Must have ability to move about the classroom/building and school property, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work‑related tasks with and without students.
- The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
- Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
- Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently.
Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, including work on slippery and uneven surfaces, and may involve working around students, school equipment, and office equipment.
Work SchedulesMust be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar.
Background ChecksSelected individuals must pass a criminal history background check.
