Supervisory Responsibilities:

No supervision is exercised in this role.

Objective:
The student instructor/coordinator will be a hybrid role between the Operations and Education Divisions. When the student I/C graduates and passes the State of Michigan IC exam, they will be transferred to the Education division in a full-time capacity as an Instructor/Coordinator

Essential Duties:

  • Know and support the Mission Statement, Policy/Procedures and standards of MMR.
  • If unlicensed at the time of hire, attend the MMR the approved instructor/coordinator course.
  • Attend the MMR approved I/C course as prescribed by the course coordinator
  • Assist students with the resources needed for course completion. Coordinate necessary support and resources as necessary and approved to meet needs of the program.
  • Ensure that classroom resources are available, functional and set up as needed to present the components of the training session/program (i.e. handouts, AV equipment, and practical skills equipment).
  • Prepare for and present information/skills as necessary to instruct a specific subject matter according to recommended guidelines and produce a successful outcome. Create, administer and document results of evaluations to monitor student progress and identify areas that may need more attention by the instructor and responds appropriately.
  • Ensure that program preparation is complete and ongoing as necessary so that programs are run in an efficient manner.
  • Check and maintain education resources.
  • Contribute to the marketing process as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill and Competency Requirements:

  • State of Michigan licensure as a Paramedic or EMT.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an "active" EMS provider, at same or higher level than is expected to teach
  • Minimum of 1 year of service with MMR
  • In good standing with MMR including a history of outstanding performance
  • Possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver license and maintain an acceptable driving record as defined by MMR's insurance carrier
  • Must attend assigned meetings
  • May be appointed to position without degree, however, MMR encourages instructors to begin course work towards a Bachelor's degree within 12 months of being appointed
  • Must have Trauma, ACLS and Pediatrics provider status and BLS Instructor status for EMT or higher-level EMS programs. Instructor status for special programs is preferred
  • EMS Instruction awareness:
    Knows the key concepts and variables that define EMS instruction. (i.e. MDHHS- BEPESOC requirement, EMS program accreditation requirements and DOT standards
  • Ability to serve as an effective role model for students and subordinates
  • Knowledge of instructional equipment and maintenance
  • Ability to gain respect from others rather than demand it and create a positive learning atmosphere
  • Ability to adapt to different styles, ideas and changes
  • Ability to identify problems before they occur and effectively deal with stressful situations that do occur
  • Advanced computer skills including the ability to utilize a computer PC with Windows operating system
  • Ability to operate office equipment, including but not limited to, copier, fax machine, scanner, monitor, multi-line telephone, printer, typewriter and calculator
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Skilled in typing, data entry, electronic filing, document retrieval and advanced map applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, in the English language
  • Must complete initial and annual Bloodborne Pathogens Training
  • The candidate must take the licensing exam as soon as able, and subsequently thereafter if multiple attempts are required. If the candidate fails to obtain licensure within 3 attempts, the candidate is returned to operations and must repay the tuition and materials fees.
  • Applicants who are not licensed as an instructor/coordinator must obtain licensure as an instructor/coordinator within 6 months of hire or 35 days from the completion of the approved instructor/coordinator course, whichever occurs first.
  • The applicant must be willing to accept a position in the education division with priority given to Mount Pleasant, Traverse City, or specialty course instructor.
  • The candidate must serve in the education division for 2 years after licensing as an I/C.
  • Must be at least 18 years old

Physical Factors:
Suitable dexterity to operate standard office equipment. Capability to stand or sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to bend, stoop, reach and squat.

Working Conditions:

Most work is done in a typical office setting with daily exposure in all other department areas.
