Adjunct Instructor For Construction Trades Mathematics
The Adjunct Instructor for Construction Trades Mathematics is responsible for providing high-quality instruction that supports student learning and success in the Construction Technology program. This position teaches applied mathematics concepts through real-world construction applications, helping students develop the foundational skills needed for careers in the construction and technical trades. The instructor creates an engaging, hands-on learning environment that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical skill development.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in Construction Technology, Construction Management, Mathematics, Engineering Technology, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and industry experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in construction, construction management, technical education, or a related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of applied mathematics utilized in construction and technical occupations.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to explain mathematical concepts in practical and accessible ways.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide effective in-person instruction in Construction Trades Mathematics (CMT 101).
- Develop and deliver course materials that align with approved student learning outcomes and college standards.
- Teach applied mathematics concepts including fractions, decimals, measurement conversions, algebra, geometry, and introductory trigonometry through construction-related applications.
- Facilitate hands-on activities involving measuring and layout, blueprint interpretation, material estimating, cost calculations, and construction problem solving.
- Assess and evaluate student learning through assignments, projects, quizzes, and practical exercises.
- Maintain accurate and timely student records, including attendance, grades, and course communications.
- Utilize the College's learning management system and instructional technologies to support student learning.
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that encourages student engagement and academic success.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students regarding their academic progress.
- Participate in required departmental meetings, orientations, and professional development activities as appropriate.
Teaching Responsibilities
When teaching any courses including but not limited to online, accelerated, livestream, hybrid and face-to-face formats, the adjunct instructor will meet the responsibilities of adjunct faculty in the areas of Curriculum, Teaching Effectiveness, and Professional Qualities and Abilities. Adjunct faculty are encouraged to participate in Professional Development and in areas that Support of College and Community Initiatives.
Teaching Effectiveness
- Compiles, administers, and grades examinations and other learning activities
- Uses current and emerging technologies in distance learning and in the classroom; conducts classroom research with classroom assessment techniques
- Listens to students and coaches them to actively participate in the learning process
- Uses a variety of assessments to promotes student demonstration of learning through exams, discussions, debates, presentations, simulations, and/or debriefings
- Provides a course syllabus to the students that includes the College Syllabus information outlined in Moodle
- Maintains and regularly updates Moodle gradebook and/or other electronic grading systems
Faculty Professional Development
- Continually engages in learning and scholarship in the area of specialization as time allows
Support of College, Community Initiatives
- Meets requirements for the adjunct review process
- Is fully committed to the mission and values of Northwestern Michigan College
Supervisory Responsibilities

Adjunct Faculty General Responsibilities
- Attend and comply with all HR required Faculty member training
- Report grades by college deadlines
- Keep accurate student academic records
- Meet classes during the time scheduled and for the appropriate length of time
- Make reasonable accommodations as approved by Disability Support Services to meet students' needs in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities (ADA)
- Follow College policy on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Respond to requests including, but not limited to Academic Chairs, Department Heads, committee chairs, and the Records Office in a timely and thorough manner
- Meet requirements of the Adjunct Performance Review Process in a timely manner and with the intention of maintaining teaching effectiveness, professional development, and support of College/ community initiatives
- Assess student learning outcomes and make improvements based on the assessment results
- Develop and distribute course syllabi for each course taught to each student that follows the approved course syllabus criteria template
