Surgical Technology Adjunct Instructor
The surgical technology adjunct instructor can assist with the instruction of skills lab, clinical observation, and classroom instruction of various courses, dependent on need. This adjunct faculty member will employ a range of suitable strategies to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions and encourage active learning in all students, maintain proper class-related records, and promptly assess student coursework and apprise students of progress.
Each adjunct faculty member is primarily responsible for effectively teaching students in those classes assigned. In such assignments, each adjunct faculty member is a member of the professional teaching staff that is responsible for effectively implementing the mission of the College and the Health Occupations Academic Area. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to relate well to a diverse population of learners.
Responsibilities may include teaching nights, weekends, and/or online instruction.
Adjunct faculty have these responsibilities; other duties may be assigned.
Teaching Responsibilities
- Compiles, administers, and grades examinations and other learning activities
- Uses current and emerging technologies in distance learning and in the classroom; conducts classroom research with classroom assessment techniques
- Listens to students and coaches them to actively participate in the learning process
- Uses a variety of assessments to promotes student demonstration of learning through exams, discussions, debates, presentations, simulations, and/or debriefings
- Provides a course syllabus to the students that includes the College Syllabus information outlined in Moodle
- Maintains and regularly updates Moodle gradebook and/or other electronic grading systems
Teaching Effectiveness
- Continually engages in learning and scholarship in the area of specialization as time allows
Support of College, Community Initiatives
- Meets requirements for the adjunct review process
- Is fully committed to the mission and values of Northwestern Michigan College
Supervisory Responsibilities
None
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Orients new students to the department, including the hospital's job description for Surgical Technologists, the Policy and Procedure Manual, the availability and location of educational resources, and all the safety precautions and emergency protocols.
- Assigns appropriate cases to each student in absence of OR management staff.
- Alters assignments as necessary to suit student needs in conjunction with OR management staff.
- Monitors each student's progress throughout the course of the day.
- Makes himself/herself available for students' questions and learning needs.
- Exhibits professional behavior and serves as a role model for students.
- Promotes patient and student safety according to hospital policy, AORN, and AST standards and guidelines.
- Creates a positive and supportive learning environment, including being an advocate for the student's status as a learner.
- Makes systematic observations and objective judgments about student performance.
- Meets with each student individually once a week.
- Gives each student feedback about his/her performance, providing suggestions for improvement.
- Meets regularly with the Program/Clinical Coordinator to maintain productive two-way communication between the program and Operating room personnel.
- Discusses student evaluation with each student's preceptor(s).
- At the end of each rotation, prepares (or supervises the preparation of) a Clinical Evaluation Form, documenting the progress of each student.
- At the end of each rotation, discusses the Clinical Evaluation Form with each student, attempting to provide guidance for future performance.
- Provides feedback to the program about current department/hospital policies or changes in practice in the field and makes suggestions for program modifications or improvement.
- Attends two (2) meetings a year with the Program Coordinator and the other Clinical Instructors to discuss program goals, policies, and educational methodologies.
