3rd Assistant Engineer

Grand River Navigation Company, a division of Rand Logistics, seeks a 3rd Assistant Engineer to support safe and efficient operation of propulsion and auxiliary machinery aboard U.S.

-flag Great Lakes bulk carriers. In this role, you'll stand engineering watches, perform inspections, and carry out preventive and corrective maintenance on engines, pumps, electrical and hydraulic systems. You'll follow strict safety, environmental, and regulatory procedures while working in a professional, team-based environment with strong training, compliance, and career advancement opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Assist with operation and monitoring of propulsion and auxiliary machinery during assigned watches
• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on engines, pumps, electrical, hydraulic, and support systems
• Conduct routine inspections, record equipment readings, and report abnormalities promptly
• Follow all safety, environmental, and regulatory procedures and support a safety-first culture
• Assist with troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues under direction of senior engineers
• Maintain accurate logs, maintenance records, and technical documentation
• Support vessel readiness for loading, unloading, and transit on Great Lakes routes
• Participate in drills, training, and compliance activities to meet USCG and company standards
• Collaborate with deck and engineering crew to ensure reliable and efficient vessel operations
• Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices and shipboard procedures
