First Assistant Marine Engineer - Lakes Bulk Carrier

Grand River Navigation Company, a division of Rand Logistics, seeks a 1st Assistant Engineer to support safe, efficient operation of U.S.

-flag bulk carriers on the Great Lakes. In this role, you assist the Chief Engineer with daily engine room operations, machinery maintenance, and regulatory compliance for vessels transporting commodities such as limestone, coal, iron ore, and salt. You will lead engine room watches, perform inspections, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues, and ensure strict adherence to safety and environmental standards. Responsibilities

• Assist Chief Engineer with safe and efficient operation of all vessel propulsion and auxiliary machinery
• Monitor, maintain, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems in the engine room
• Oversee engine room watch, inspections, and log-keeping to ensure regulatory and company compliance
• Support implementation of preventive maintenance schedules and troubleshooting procedures
• Ensure strict adherence to safety, environmental, and pollution prevention standards
• Coordinate with deck and operations teams to support reliable cargo transportation schedules
• Train and mentor junior engineering crew in procedures and best practices
• Participate in drills, inspections, and audits to uphold safety-first culture
