Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan houses a 22‑bed level 3 NICU staffed by 2 full‑time clinical neonatologists and 4.5 neonatal nurse practitioners. This is the only NICU in the northern lower peninsula, serving a referral region spanning 150 miles.
The neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) works collaboratively with supervising neonatologists to coordinate patient care for high‑risk newborns using a family‑centered approach. Responsibilities include managing well and critically ill infants, leading the transport team, and performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Responsibilities- Conduct comprehensive physical assessments of patients.
- Establish medical diagnoses for common short‑term or chronic health problems.
- Order and interpret laboratory tests; perform diagnostic and invasive and noninvasive procedures including X‑ray (chest, abdomen, skeletal), MRI, EEG, EKG, echocardiogram, hearing screening, GI studies, GU studies, ultrasound, CT.
- Perform invasive procedures such as arterial puncture, suprapubic bladder tap, chest tube placement and removal, endotracheal intubation, lumbar puncture, needle thoracentesis, umbilical and arterial catheterization, central venous catheter placement, venipuncture, exchange transfusion.
- Prescribe medications in collaboration with the neonatologist.
- Prescribe therapeutic treatments including respiratory therapy (nasal cannula, CPAP, ventilation initiation and adjustments), inhalation treatments, chest physiotherapy, suctioning.
- Initiate and adjust fluid requirements, parenteral and enteral nutrition, and placement of OG and NG tubes.
- Perform urinary catheterization, blood transfusions, phototherapy, suture removal.
- Make patient referrals to appropriate physicians or other health care providers.
- Provide emergency care, including CPR and resuscitative measures until a neonatologist or designee is available.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
- Certified as Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Association.
- Neonatal transport experience preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications.
- NRP instructor status encouraged; advanced neonatal nurse practitioner certification by NCC preferred.
- Candidate must obtain appropriate clinical privileges through MMC’s credentialing processes.
