Job Description
Neurosurgical Advanced Practice Professional is a Physician‑dependent practitioner responsible primarily for medical and surgical management of patients admitted to the Neurosurgery Service under the supervision of an attending Neurosurgeon on emergency room call for the day. The APP performs functions based on personal experience, professional judgment, discussion with the physician, knowledge of physician preference, written protocols and institutional policies. Under supervision of a surgeon the APP performs advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks related to the neurosurgery patient from the ER phase, in the OR as necessary, and throughout the patient’s admission.
At the direction of the surgeon, the APP is responsible for history and physical examination, admission notes, daily progress notes, admission and routine orders, daily rounds, consultation notes, ED consult notes, and attendance at trauma performance improvement and neurosurgical section meetings (at least 75% attendance).

- On‑call expectations are an integral part of the role; times and frequency are determined by staffing and coverage needs
- Responds to consultations to the ED department within 30 minutes of being called
- Manages patient care in the ED under direct supervision of the Neurosurgeons when appropriate (performing comprehensive history and physical examinations, ordering appropriate laboratory and radiographic studies, interpreting results, making consults, admission/discharge orders, addressing code status)
- Dictates history and physicals, consultations, procedure notes, and discharge summaries
- Communicates with OR Scheduler regarding patient status and room availability for neurosurgery patients
- Assists the Neurosurgeon in the OR when deemed necessary while other patients receive daily care directions
- Maintains daily contact with the Neurosurgeon on call that day
- Completes appropriate documentation of all evaluations, care, and services rendered in the medical record/Power Chart
- Expedites disposition by identifying patient and family referral needs (transportation, housing, psychosocial, financial, caregiver)
- Performs pre‑ and post‑operative patient education for patients and families
- Responds to telephone inquiries on discharged patients and provides appropriate medical care or counseling
- Communicates with referring or primary‑care physicians regarding patient care and treatment
- Rounds on and manages inpatients: monitors progress, orders daily labs and x‑rays, interprets labs and x‑rays, facilitates appropriate consults, conducts floor calls, assesses patients, develops and implements treatment plans, monitors effectiveness of therapeutic interventions per protocol, and manages discharge activities
- Exercises physician‑delegated prescriptive authority pursuant to state and federal restrictions
- Attends CME seminars and conferences to maintain licensure and currency in the field
- Maintains current Basic Life Support certification
- Demonstrates effective judgment and the ability to understand, react competently, and treat unique needs of the neurosurgical patient population
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Licensed by the State of Michigan to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
Nurse Practitioner- Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
- Master of Science degree in Nursing and ANCC or ACNP board certified as a Nurse Practitioner
- Certification regarding Neurosurgery is preferred
