Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking a Per Diem Staff Nurse for the New Jersey State Prison located in Trenton, NJ. The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. The nurse works with a variety of health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment, frequently functions guided by nursing protocols, and serves as a team leader as assigned.
KeyDuties
- Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of the inmate patient including adults (18 to 64 years) and geriatrics (65+) and their families within the framework established by the correctional system.
- Utilizes effective communication skills by demonstrating respect, concern and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships.
- Uses current knowledge to promote a safe environment for providing health care to inmate-patients.
- Maintains current professional skills and continues professional growth to enhance the practice of correctional nursing and the image of the organization.
- Adheres to personnel policies to enhance the operation of the health care unit.

Rate: $59.01 per hour (FLSA Nonexempt, Grade 99H)

As a first responder, the nurse must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. The nurse must be physically able to lift and carry, up to 45 pounds, an emergency treatment bag that may be required to be carried upstairs, and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).

Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
QualificationsMinimum Education:
Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.
- CPR Certification required.
- Valid Driver’s License required; must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
- Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.
