University Correctional Health Care (UCHC), part of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, delivers physical, mental, dental, and sex offender treatment services to inmates and staff within the New Jersey correctional system. The role is located at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton.
Posting SummaryWe are seeking a part‑time Staff Nurse to provide clinical nursing care in an ambulatory setting, primarily for inmates. The position requires the use of the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care; coordinate with multidisciplinary teams; and serve as a charge nurse when required.
Duties- Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of residents, including adolescents and adults.
- Performs assessments in various settings: initial intake, sick call, emergency situations, chronic care clinics, and infirmary.
- Works collaboratively with health‑care professionals and security officers in the correctional environment.
- Identifies inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives and implements interventions and solutions for identified problems.
- Plans nursing care based on assessment findings; makes timely referrals and initiates appropriate interventions in line with institutional policies.
- As team leader or charge nurse, delegates duties to staff and guides the provision of care.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in New Jersey.
- CPR certification.
- Valid driver’s license and personal transportation, or alternative means.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
- Minimum one year of experience in a correctional setting.
Must be able to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes, lift and carry an emergency treatment bag up to 45 pounds, and assist in lifting or rotating patients up to 50 pounds. The role requires responsiveness as a first responder.

Status:
Part Time (20 hours per week; Evening shift). Requires full onsite work arrangement.
Minimum: $37,230 | Mid range: $46,540 | Maximum: $54,050 (may vary by qualification, experience, and funding).
