Overview

University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) operates within Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. UCHC is dedicated to providing physical, mental health, dental, and sex offender treatment services to individuals involved in New Jersey’s criminal justice system.

We are seeking a Per Diem Staff Nurse for the New Jersey State Prison located in Trenton, NJ. The role focuses on ambulatory care, working with a multidisciplinary team in a correctional environment and often functioning as a team leader.

• Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet the physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of inmate patients (ages 18–64 and 65+) and their families.
• Demonstrate effective communication, respect, concern, and courtesy in all interactions.
• Use current knowledge to promote a safe environment for delivering health care to inmate patients.
• Maintain professional skills and pursue ongoing professional growth to enhance correctional nursing practice and organizational image.
• Adhere to personnel policies to support efficient operation of the health care unit.

• Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in New Jersey.
• CPR certification is required.
• Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle or alternative transportation between sites.

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
• Minimum of one year of experience in a correctional setting.

Must be physically capable of performing CPR for at least 10 minutes, lifting and carrying an emergency treatment bag up to 45 pounds, and assisting in lifting/rotating patients up to 50 pounds. Approval by the Department of Corrections (DOC) is required.

• Full onsite work arrangement.
• Shift: Rotating.
• Daily hours: 19.
• Staff appointment: 12‑month term.
• Grade: 99H.
• Salary: $59.01 per hour.
