Under the direction of a Research Scientist I or other supervisory official in a state department, institution, or agency, the incumbent conducts or participates in research projects or programs in a specified professional field and performs related work.
Specific ResponsibilitiesThe scientist will:
- Conduct and assist in studies related to environmental contaminants with a pronounced focus on PFAS.
- Serve as a manager of research contracts and grants with internal and external collaborators.
- Assist in conceptualizing and developing research studies and contracts.
- Conduct field audits and coordinate requests for proposals.
- Provide technical support to other projects and staff.
- Evaluate the occurrence of contaminants of concern, assess risk to human and environmental health, and disseminate summary information and data.
- Serve as a technical PFAS point‑of‑contact for the division and represent the Division on internal and external committees and the NJDEP Science Advisory Board.
- Proven understanding of PFAS in the environment.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Knowledge of principles of modern research and statistical methods.
- Knowledge of essential quality assurance practices.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise technical reports.
- Education:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline appropriate to the position. - Experience:
Two (2) years in a field appropriate to the position. A Doctorate may substitute for the required experience. - All U.S. degrees and transcripts must be from an accredited institution; foreign degrees must be evaluated for accreditation by the closing date.

Appointees must possess a valid driver’s license in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary for the essential duties of the position.
