JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title:

Substitute Teacher

Reports to and works with the classroom teacher to cover classroom absences, is supervised by the building principal. Responsible for assisting with instruction and general supervision and management of the class.

Qualifications:

Must have a warm and friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, be able to relate well to children, and be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the Trenton Special School District policies and philosophy. Must be at least 18 years old.

Have the ability to conform to an established work schedule
Have effective interpersonal skills
Have the ability to communicate in a concise and effective manner
Have the ability to understand and follow instructions precisely
Have the ability to exercise tact, discretion and confidentiality
Have the ability to deal with students
Have the ability to accept responsibility for the direction, control, or planning of an activity.
Have the ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without the loss of efficiency of composure.

Responsibilities:

Assist in implementing the daily program under the direction of the teacher
Assist in preparing the learning environment, and preparing needed materials and supplies.
Supervise the classroom when the teacher is out of the room.
Assist in other ways as requested.
Maintain a professional attitude and loyalty to the District at all times
Treat all children with dignity and respect
Help supervise and promote activities designed to enhance the healthy emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development of children. Help maintain a neat and organized classroom.
Supervise activities to ensure safety at all times.

Physical Requirements:

In case of an emergency must be able to lift or assist in lifting a student in need
Work with children on the floor
Work outdoors in any variety of weather
Repetitive bending, stretching, and stooping
Climb up and down stairs
Have mobility required to ensure the safety of children
Have visual and hearing capabilities that allow consistent supervision of children
Assist in bus loading and unloading
Provide extra assistance to students with special needs, such as non-English-speaking students or those with physical and mental disabilities
