SUMMARYMerritt Elementary School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate K-2 Special Education Teacher to join our dynamic team in the 2026/2027 school year. This full-time position (1.0 FTE) requires a passionate educator who is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students with diverse learning needs. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of young learners.
POSITIONDESCRIPTION
Provides instructional and classroom support to students with disabilities in inclusive, resource, and/or self-contained settings. Develops and delivers individualized instruction aligned to IEP goals and grade-level standards. Collaborates with general education teachers, support staff, and families to ensure access, equity, and academic growth for all students. Supports students’ academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs using evidence-based interventions and data-driven instruction. Ensures compliance with state and federal laws related to special education and maintains accurate documentation.
Promotes a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
- Teaches secondary school or elementary school courses
- Plans education schedules for students in accordance with their previous education, abilities, interests and needs
- Counsels students on general behavior, citizenship, personal problems and vocational interests
- Prepares lesson plans, determines methods of presentation, and prepares tests
- Marks tests and records grades
- Directs helpers and tutors in instruction methods and the preparation of tools
- Oversees study groups
- Participates in staff discussion on individual cases
- Supervises students assigned by colleges for practice teaching
- Maintains records and prepares reports and correspondence related to the work
- Performs related work as assigned
- Participates in grade-level/content team meetings and collaborative planning sessions
- Uses data to plan, differentiate, and adjust instruction to meet the needs of all learners
- Incorporates technology to enhance instruction and foster student engagement
- Maintains consistent communication with families regarding academic progress, behavior, and classroom activities
- Provides specially designed instruction to students with disabilities as outlined in IEPs
- Develops and implements IEPs in compliance with federal, state, and district guidelines
- Participates in and facilitates IEP meetings, METs, and other required student support meetings
- Collaborates with general education teachers to support inclusion and co‑teaching practices
- Assesses student needs through formal and informal assessments and progress monitoring
- Differentiates instruction and provides accommodations/modifications based on student needs
- Implements behavior support plans, social‑emotional interventions, and positive behavior strategies
- Maintains accurate and timely documentation including IEPs, progress reports, and service logs
- Communicates regularly with families regarding student progress and support strategies
- Participates in school‑wide data teams and MTSS/RTI processes
- Supports students in accessing the general education curriculum and extracurricular activities
- Participates in professional development and district training related to special education
- Supervises and supports paraprofessionals and classroom aides, where applicable
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of teaching
- Considerable knowledge of techniques applicable in conducting classes for children and adults
- Considerable knowledge of adapting teaching methods and materials to meet the interests and learning styles of students
- Considerable knowledge of texts, materials, supplies and equipment
- Ability to formulate courses of study and select instruction aids
- Ability to prepare lesson plans, conduct classes, construct tests, and interpret test results
