Position Overview

Career and Technical Education (CTE) Barbering Instructor – Ypsilanti Community High School, Ypsilanti, MI.

Ypsilanti Community High School is seeking an innovative, passionate, and industry experienced Career and Technical Education (CTE) Barbering Instructor to lead our growing Barbering Program.

General Statement of the Job

Under the general supervision of school administration, the CTE Barbering Instructor provides high-quality instruction that prepares students for careers in the barbering and grooming industry. The instructor is responsible for planning and delivering standards‑based instruction, supervising students in classroom and laboratory settings, maintaining a safe and industry‑standard learning environment, and fostering the development of technical, academic, employability, and entrepreneurial skills.

The CTE Barbering Instructor is responsible for the overall operation, management, and supervision of the Barbering Program, including curriculum implementation, student assessment, laboratory safety, equipment maintenance, industry partnerships, and work‑based learning opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instruction and Curriculum
  • Develop and deliver engaging lessons aligned with Michigan CTE standards and barbering industry requirements.
  • Provide classroom, laboratory, and hands‑on instruction in barbering techniques and procedures.
  • Teach topics including haircutting, shaving, styling, sanitation, safety, customer service, professional ethics, business operations, and entrepreneurship.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning needs.
  • Integrate employability skills, workplace readiness, and career exploration into daily instruction.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and technologies to enhance student engagement and achievement.
  • Develop and maintain lesson plans that align with district curriculum, state standards, and industry expectations.
Student Learning and Assessment
  • Assess student progress using formative and summative assessments.
  • Monitor student achievement and provide timely feedback.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, competencies, certifications, and student performance.
  • Develop individualized support strategies to promote student success.

Prepare and support students in successfully completing all required competencies, practical experiences, and technical skill assessments necessary to sit for the Michigan State Board of Barber Examiners licensing examination, with the goal of earning a Michigan Barber License upon program completion.

Program Management
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and industry-standard barbering laboratory environment.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, sanitation, district, state, and federal regulations.
  • Manage inventory, supplies, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Supervise students during classroom instruction, laboratory experiences, and work‑based learning activities.
  • Coordinate student participation in career and technical student organizations, competitions, and industry events as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with local barbershops, businesses, and industry professionals.
Student Support and School Climate
  • Instruct and counsel students to enhance academic performance, employability skills, professionalism, and workplace readiness.
  • Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment.
  • Monitor students in a variety of educational settings to ensure safety and engagement.
Collaboration and Communication
  • Collaborate with school staff, administrators, counselors, industry partners, and community organizations.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and guardians.
  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings, CTE initiatives, and school improvement efforts.
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and program expectations.
  • Assist with student recruitment, program promotion, and community outreach activities.
