The English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher is responsible for providing effective and inclusive instruction to students whose primary language is not English. The ELL Teacher will assess students language proficiency, develop lesson plans that cater to diverse learning needs, and foster a supportive environment to promote English language development and academic success.
Responsibilities- Collaborate with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators to address instructional and classroom issues, monitor individual student progress, and communicate that progress with families, students, and colleagues.
- Assist school administrators at multiple school sites (K-8) to support ELL needs and ensure compliance with federal and state expectations around screenings, testing, communication, and reporting.
- Support the instructional process by developing English Learner students ability to perform courses of study in English; create lesson plans and deliver group and individual instruction within established curriculum guidelines.
- Consult with staff regarding instructional techniques and organization to provide guidance and mentoring.
- Develop and implement lesson plans focusing on language acquisition and integration into the mainstream curriculum.
- Utilize evidence-based instructional strategies that support differentiated learning.
- Teach English language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in a structured and engaging manner.
- Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages participation and fosters a love for learning.
- Coordinate administrative activities to ensure a positive learning environment and efficient use of resources within the program area.
- Coordinate language proficiency testing to identify and monitor progress for students eligible for English Language programs.
- Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to support ELL students in content areas.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss student progress, interventions, and strategies for ELL learners.
- Identify program needs (e.g., instructional materials and equipment) to inform school administration for EL program enhancement.
- Participate in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars to convey and gather information required to perform functions.
- Prepare reports and written materials to document activities and ensure compliance with guidelines.
- Communicate with families regarding student progress and provide resources to support language development at home.
- Encourage family involvement and cultural exchange to build community.
- Utilize data-driven instruction to deliver standards-driven instruction to all students.
- Complete assessments, grading, planning, and conferences with students, staff, and families within appropriate timelines.
- Follow oversight as needed to identify strategies for supporting and instructing students with exceptional needs and ensure appropriate IEP/504 plan implementation.
- Develop regular family communication and community partnerships.
- Keep cumulative folders updated as ongoing case files for current students.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in ELL education and cultural competency.
- Contribute to school-wide initiatives that promote equity and inclusion.
- Perform other duties as outlined by the School Leadership.
- Commit to anti-racism, equity, and racial justice in all efforts, and participate in related work to support students.
- Comply with charter, federal, state, and local laws and regulations including NYS DOE, NYS Department of Health, and NYS Office of Children and Family Services; adhere to organizational policies and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor s Degree from an accredited College or University in Education, Linguistics, or a related field required;
Master s Degree preferred. - Valid NYS Certification as an ESL, ENL, ELL, or ML Instructor.
- Professional experience working with ELL students and case management in a diverse educational setting (charter, private, or public preferred).
