Job Summary
:
An interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing shall meet the qualifications as set forth in Mich. Admin. Code R. 393.5026.

• Fully qualified educational interpreter with an EIPA Performance Score of 4.0 or above (substitutes must improve toward 4.0 following Michigan DOAR rules) and must hold a Michigan Educational Endorsement (elementary preferred).
• Must be fluent in ASL or the sign language determined by the educational team.
• Must command written and oral English with correct syntax, semantics, and spelling.
• Must complete mandatory continuing education units required by Michigan to maintain licensure.
• Must maintain cooperative relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public while keeping confidentiality.
• Must work effectively as part of a professional team.
• Must demonstrate professional behavior, moral character, and a welcoming attitude toward all students needing interpreting services.
• Must commit strongly to equity, social justice, and inclusion in all practices.

• Interpret in line with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
• Facilitate impartial communication between deaf or hard‑of‑hearing persons and hearing persons, supporting social communication.
• Obtain student communication and academic level information to select the preferred sign language and appropriate language level.
• Maintain propers lighting, positioning, dress, punctuality, and other logistical/logistical considerations for quality interpreting.
• Interpret the entire class environment to provide student access to information and communication, using paraphrasing and summarizing as needed.
• Act as an educational‑team member and provide input to the DHH teacher consultant.
• Preserve the integrity of oral‑sign philosophies/systems mandated for each student.
• Review and learn class content, technical signs, and terminology.
• Monitor student comprehension.
• Maintain mandatory attendance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Must stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear (quiet or noisy environment), and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Must possess near‑field, distance vision, and focus ability. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to meet mandatory essential functions.

The noise level is usually loud to moderate; work may be indoors or outdoors.

Must compare, analyze, communicate orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, employ interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.

The employee must remain free of alcohol or drugs throughout employment as mandated by Board Policy #4210.
