Job Summary

The Machinist is responsible for set-up and operating a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. They fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, by applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Calculate dimensions or tolerances of work pieces, products, or equipment by using instruments such as micrometers or Vernier calipers
  • Measure dimensions of completed products or work pieces to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Machine parts to specifications, using machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, cutting equipment, or grinders.
  • Set up, adjust, or operate basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, or materials onto machines.
  • Mount attachments or tools onto production equipment.
  • Measure, examine, or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments, such as micrometers.
  • Measure dimensions of completed products or work pieces to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Monitor and maintain equipment operation and machine tools to ensure proper functioning and operational conditions. Including but not limited to lubrication, replacement of parts, testing operation, disassembling and re‑assembling equipment for maintenance or repair.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, or engineering information to determine methods or sequences of operations needed to fabricate products.
  • Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency.
  • Program computers or electronic instruments, such as numerically controlled machine tools.
  • Diagnose machine tool and equipment malfunctions to determine the need for adjustments or repairs.
  • Measure materials to mark reference points, cutting lines, or other indicators.
  • Draw guidelines or markings on materials or work pieces using patterns or other references.
  • Fit and assemble parts to make or repair assembly tools.
  • Confer with numerical control programmers to check and ensure that new programs or machinery will function properly, and that output will meet specifications.
  • Separate scrap waste and related materials for reuse, recycling, or disposal.
  • Evaluate machining procedures and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency or adaptability.
  • Dismantle machines or equipment, using hand tools or power tools to examine parts for defects and replace defective parts where needed.
  • Order and maintain material for the machine shop and spare parts.
  • Build experimental parts for assemblies.
  • Adhere to federal and state regulations.
  • Adhere to all company policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
Position Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent working experience
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of related experience.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of training involving both on‑the‑job experience and informal training with experienced workers. A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated with these occupations.
  • Training in vocational schools, related on‑the‑job experience, or an associate degree is preferred.
  • License or certificates that applies to any training or skill trades classes GD&T/CMM Training, etc.
  • Hands‑on experience with different manual, semi‑automated or automated tools and machines (lathes, grinders, etc.).
  • In‑depth knowledge of the properties of metal and other materials.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and manuals.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills with robust attention to detail.
